Jay-Z has been racking in the big name athletes to his agency over the last couple months. The newest addition to Roc Nation Sports is reported to be Oklahoma City star Kevin Durant.
Durant signed an $85 million dollar extension with the Thunder in 2010 that takes him through the 2015-2016 season. Sources say that Durant is under the impression that he doesn’t need a contract agent now, due to his long term contract with Oklahoma City. Instead he is more interested in increasing his brand. And what better way to increase your brand than teaming up with arguably the most notable rapper in recent history?
Behind Lebron James and Kobe Bryant, Kevin Durant is the most notable player in the NBA to the average fan. Plus, he is such a nice guy that it is easy for people to like him. Just look at him giving $1 million to the Oklahoma tornado victims as proof of his generosity and heart.
It is unclear whether Jay-Z will be Durant’s agent or marketer. If he ends up being Durant’s agent, he will have to sell his share in the Brooklyn Nets. But if he is just a marketer for Durant, than it is rumored that he will be able to keep his share. Lets be honest though, Jay-Z only owns 1/16th of 1% of the Brooklyn Nets. So if he is forced to sell the share in the team, it is not like he will be giving up a substantial amount of money (for him). In fact, I am pretty sure he would make more money being the agent of Kevin Durant, than owning that amount of the Brooklyn Nets.
Plus Jay-Z may have cut some ties with the Brooklyn Nets when he added these lyrics to his latest song “Open Letter”
Would’ve brought the Nets to Brooklyn for free
Except I made millions off it, you f****n’ dweeb
I still own the building, I’m still keeping my seat
Y’all buy that bulls**t, you’d better keep y’all receipt
The big names don’t stop at Kevin Durant. Roc Nation Sports also contains Robinson Cano, Geno Smith and Skylar Diggins. Both Victor Cruz and DeSean Jackson have also shown major interest in joining Roc Nation Sports.
