Five things I'm thinking about this weekend while remembering to bend the bills on all my baseball caps. 1. Something that seems true (and totally is): Perry Jones cost himself a lot of money by returning to Baylor, but money isn't everything. Jones would have been a top-ten pick last year. Maybe top five. So it's easy to criticize him for returning to Baylor, where he had a disappointing sophomore year, his team failed to live up to its hype and then he became a late-first-round pick. If it's all about the money, it was an idiotic choice. But if it's not about the money, look what Jones got out of all this: A second year of college (did you have fun in college?) and a spot on a team that just played in the NBA Finals. He'll get to enter the NBA as a supporting player rather than the hope of a franchise, and he has always seemed like a better fit for a secondary role. He will get to win. And if he plays well in his role, well, money's not going to be a problem anyway. 2. A thing that doesn't seem true (but totally is): Missing out on Dwight Howard is not nearly the failure it appears to be, because the Rockets are probably going to stink now. They should stink, anyway. I'm no advocate of tanking, but I am an advocate of trading away players who are grouchy about their situation (Kyle Lowry, Kevin Martin), players who are probably about to start losing value (Luis Scola) and players who are duplicates of each other (Marcus Morris, Terrence Jones, Royce White). The Rockets have a chance to really stink this year, and if they can't get Howard some way or another, they should go for it. They could stink in the best way possible, which is with young (inexpensive) players of promise who could be key players on a team with a viable star, but who are bad enough in the short-term that the team could actually land a top-five pick. Obviously, GM Daryl Morey was trying to use all those draft picks to turn them into Howard, but I think in the back of his mind he realized that having that blow up in his face would not really blow up in his face. A bad 2012-13 season can fairly easily be sold to the public as an unfortunate but eventually helpful consequence of the Big Gamble of 2012. 3. Something that is neither true nor untrue (but is fun to talk about): The NBA draft is being ruined by whoever is dressing these players nowadays. Remember the awful suits? What happened to the awful suits? Wherefore art thou, Jalen Rose, Samaki Walker and Drew Gooden? It all used to be part of the fun. But now it actually looks like these guys have a clue, or at least someone who is willing to talk them out of their terrible ideas. Which is a shame. The draft was much better when it seemed like there was a realistic chance of somebody showing up in a green top hat. 4. Something that recently happened: Karma tapped Frank Martin on the shoulder. You remember Frank Martin. Yeller, crazy eyes, used to coach basketball at Kansas State. You know the one. Anyway, he left that job to take the same gig at South Carolina because he had beef with the current K-State athletic director, John Currie, who did not hire him. This is the poorly kept secret, anyway. So Martin left in a huff for a decidedly worse job at SC, presumably to prove some kind of point. Well, Eric Hyman, that athletic director who hired him at South Carolina? He's the new athletic director at Texas A&M, now, according to the Houston Chronicle. So before he has even coached his first practice in Columbia, he will be working for and AD who did not hire him. I am not a believer in karma, and based on everything I've heard from people around K-State's program, I'm not even sure Martin was the bad guy up there. But that's just a little difficult to ignore. 5. Something that is about to happen: Royce White is going to become really popular in Houston. For one thing, there are going to be a lot of feature stories written about him, because he has a fascinating backstory. And he's going to come off as really human and interesting in those stories, because that's the way he is. And his game is so unique that fans are going to want to see him play all the time, in much the same way football fans always want to see the running quarterback get some snaps. That is, assuming he doesn't get traded.
