According to a report by Vaqueros Bayamon, the professional basketball team in Puerto Rico for whom he was playing, former Michigan Wolverines star Robert “Tractor” Traylor has died at age 34 due to an apparent heart attack.
Traylor was found dead in his apartment in Isla Verde, Puerto Rico earlier this morning. His battles with weight throughout life were well-documented and likely played a role in his passing.
One of the most dominant big men of the mid-1990s, Traylor was a part of several formidable front-lines at the University of Michigan which included former NBA players like Maceo Baston and Maurice Taylor.
Over the course of his Michigan career, Traylor steadily improved, with his junior year being the most productive as the big center averaged 16.2 points and 10 rebounds per game. Traylor’s NBA career was somewhat less productive as he played for four teams over a seven-year career.
His time in professional basketball continued after the NBA as a journeyman, as Traylor played in several countries including Italy and Turkey before ending his career in Puerto Rico.
Traylor will always be remembered for his jovial nature on and off the court. Regardless of his place in Michigan’s tumultuous past, he was well-liked by teammates and those close to him.
He played the game with a smile on his face–but this smile never disguised his ability to dominate and intimidate when his mind was made up to do so.
