Found July 06, 2013 on Project Spurs:
On Thursday, a report was released explaining how the San Antonio Spurs were one of a handful of teams to contact free agent Anthony Morrow. Now according to Fox San Antonio, it seems the Spurs still have interest in Morrow and may continue discussions with him in the dining week. Max Sports has also learned that the Spurs have indeed shown interest in free agent shooter Anthony Morrow.  A source close to the situation described the Spurs chat with Morrow to be "exploratory", although more talks are scheduled for next week. Morrow is coming off earning $4 million with the Atlanta Hawks, who traded him to the Dallas Mavericks last season. With the Spurs preparing to re-sign Tiago Splitter, Manu Ginobili and add Marco Belinelli and Jeff Pendergraph some time on or after July 10 (when contracts can be signed), one would wonder how they would pull off such a signing if Morrow chose San Antonio. For one, Splitter (4 years, 36 million)-Ginobili (2 years, 14 million)-Belinelli’s (2 years, 6million) deals all put the team over the salary cap and force them to most likely use a part of the Mid-Level Exception (5.15 million). Even though Pendergraph’s contract numbers aren’t known yet, one would predict his deal eats up the rest of the MLE. He’s coming off earning $1.5 million per season with the Indiana Pacers. So one could assume the Spurs don’t have the financial room to add Morrow. However, since no contracts or financial figures are actually known until the players sign contracts after July 10, there’s no actual way of telling if the Spurs can financially bring in Morrow. Bringing in Morrow, a 6’5” shooting guard, would also put the Spurs’ roster at its maximum of 15 players and of those, 8 would be guards. Another avenue the team could be exploring is the trade market as they already have three backup point guards in Cory Joseph, Nando De Colo, and Patty Mills sitting on their roster along with an expiring contract in Matt Bonner. It’ll be interesting to see what the Spurs do as the offseason continues.
