Winning championships, that is what the goal should be. The Sixers who have been active this off-season have cleared much cap space by letting Elton Brand go ($18 million). When this move was announced, the dream began on who they would sign with this relief. What the Sixers have done with the new-found cap riches, sign plenty of role players.

Nick Young SG: Picking up Young the Sixers get a little better from three-point range and is obviously replacing Lou Williams minutes. The one year deal for $6 million looks like a smart business decision.grade B

Dorel Wright SF: An obvious back-up for the Sixers. Giving up a future pick to get him and taking on his salary? Not sure of “why” he was needed. grade D-

Kwame Brown C: 2 years and $6 million, Brown will be Hawes backup (unless Collins is serious about starting) and get 15 minutes a game. Playing only 9 games last year Brown is a big IF. If he stays healthy it is a good move for the money. grade C+

Maurice Harkless SF: Drafting the small forward basically made the font-court more crowded. Similar skills to what the Sixers already have makes the pick a bit more strange. According to Rod Thorn prior to the pick said “we would pick the best player available”. If Thorn stuck with that plan he would have picked Syracuse Center Fab Melo. grade C

Arnett Moultrie C: Giving up pick number 45 and a future protected number one? This coincides with the above. If the Sixers grabbed Melo this trade would have been avoided. Moultrie will not be a factor this or next season. Giving up a future first rounder? grade D

Spencer Hawes C: Hawes is a serviceable center, especially in the Eastern Conference. With not much else out there( except Dwight Howard!!!!), makes sense retaining Hawes. grade B-

Lavoy Allen C: Allen came on last season in the playoffs and played well. A full season of Allen I look forward to! grade B

With plenty of time left before the start of training camp we could see a few more moves. I certainly still advocate the signing of Iverson! Coach Collins whose plan today is to move Hawes to PF and slide Brown into the starting center spot doesn’t sound all that viable. Brown, whose career numbers indicate a back up at 15 minutes a game is not a starter. Unless, we and the rest of the league doesn’t know something that Coach Collins knows. Overall grade to date this off-season, C.
