Pistons sending Tayshaun Prince onto Memphis for Jose Calderon to complete 3-way deal with Toronto, sources tell Y!
— Adrian Wojnarowski (@WojYahooNBA) January 30, 2013
The Memphis Grizzlies have long been rumored to be trading away star small forward Rudy Gay to avoid getting over the luxury tax. The team made some quick moves earlier this past week, sending off Marreese Speights, Wayne Ellington and Josh Selby to the Cleveland Cavaliers.
It looks like Wednesday may finally be the day that the Rudy Gay era is now over in Memphis, as Yahoo! Sports’ Adrian Wojnarowski reports that the Grizzlies are very close towards sending the 26-year-old to the Toronto Raptors. In return, Memphis will receive big man Ed Davis and point guard Jose Calderon.
Wojnarowski reports that in order to make this deal happen, a third team will have to be involved, as Memphis will need to get rid of Gay. According to Woj, that team may likely be the Detroit Pistons, and it looks like their target is veteran small forward Tayshaun Prince.
Prince signed a contract extension with Detroit back in 2011, agreeing to a four-year, $28 million deal. With a base salary of $7 million, it won’t hurt Memphis too much. Prince has shown himself as proven veteran, as he can definitely help Memphis with what they need. I also wouldn’t be surprised if Corey Maggette is the other player on the Pistons that the Grizzlies are targeting.
Other sources have also said that the Boston Celtics could be another third team involved that can consume Calderon’s contract. It would make sense, especially with Rajon Rondo now out for the season. The team has been rumored towards trading Paul Pierce, which is exactly what the Grizzlies need to replace Gay.
It’s a long shot for that to happen, but it is definitely possible. Overall, this trade looks like it’s going to happen, but it’s not done yet. Whatever third team comes up, which is likely Detroit, we’ll see Gay as a Raptor going forward.
