MIAMI Teams in Spain and Russia were interested. So were the Cleveland Cavaliers. In the end, though, guard Terrel Harris wanted to continue what he started. Harris on Monday re-signed with the Heat, getting a non-guaranteed contract worth the minimum of 762,195. I have a good relationship with the Heat, and they like to bring guys up through the program, Harris, who made the Heat as a rookie last season after being undrafted out of Oklahoma State in 2009, said Tuesday. I just have to do my part and go out and make the team. The defending champion Heat have a reputation for taking undrafted guys and turning them into rotation players. Two currently on the roster who followed that path are forward Udonis Haslem and center Joel Anthony. Harris said he had offers from teams in Spain and Russia. But Harris, who played in France in 2009-10 and in Germany in 2010-11, said hes committed to the NBA. I really would rather play over here, Harris said. (Being with Miami is) another opportunity to showcase my skills for a championship team. Harris averaged 3.6 points and 2.2 rebounds in 22 games last season. While mostly a deep reserve, he did have a few solid outings, including totaling nine points and 14 rebounds Jan. 5 at Atlanta and 10 points and six rebounds April 6 against Memphis. Still, that didnt translate into any NBA offers for guaranteed money when he became a free agent. Harris said the Cavaliers invited him to training camp but that also was a non-guaranteed deal. After playing with the Heat in July in the NBA Summer League in Las Vegas, Harris said he took about a month off due to jumpers knee, a diagnosis of tendinitis in his right knee. But Harris, who has been working out the past several weeks in Miami, said hes fully healthy now and ready to go for training camp, which starts Sept. 29. The Heat can invite as many as 20 players to camp. They currently have 16 players under contract, 13 with guaranteed deals. Big men Mickell Gladness and Jarvis Varnado signed non-guaranteed deals last week. The Heat are still looking at free-agent big man Josh Harrellson, who has worked out with them twice. Harrellson averaged 4.4 points and 3.9 rebounds last season for New York. Harris return means the Heat will welcome back for training camp at least 12 of the 15 players who won title rings with them last season. Those who wont return are center Ronny Turiaf, who signed with the Los Angeles Clippers, and free-agent center Eddy Curry. The status of free-agent forward Juwan Howard, 39, remains undetermined.
