Once when I was a youngster I arranged a Tour de Wenonah(my old home town in NJ), with some of my friends. I even created a yellow jersey from an old polo shirt my Dad had in his closet and drew logos on it in black magic marker, but now its fianally dawned on me. Lets have an All Star Celebrity Tour de USA.
You heard it here first; bring back Wild World of Sports for just a minute folks. Since no one is watching the Tour de France anymore now that an American doesn't have a real solid chance this year, I have a great idea for bringing cycling back to its peak popularity again. It used to rule the American sporting world in back in the day you know? This has the same shot of bringing cycling back as Beckham does of aiding Soccer.
Let's have a sports celebrity bike race with team sponsors across the United States. Well maybe not all the way across the states due to injury and the fact that some athletes wouldn't be able to do it anywhere near that far nor would they have the free time for something that long. Let's say across a few states instead. Maybe two weeks long. They could race everyday, with an off day of two mixed in and see who's the best cyclist outside of the real pro riders.
Picture Team Nike with LeBron James, Kobe Bryant, Steve Nash and seven others against Team Adidas featuring Gilbert Arenas, Tim Duncan, Chauncey Billups, their next seven riders. You could bring back Team Gatorade; have Team AT&T, Team Underarmor, or even Team Reebok. It's an endless amount of visual product placement for company sponsors and endorsers.
The injury factor would be low because it's more of a training competition like riding the stationary bike on the sidelines during football games. They could start in Southern California and race to Seattle for weather purposes. Keep mountain stages out of it, and welcome male and female contestants together on the same teams. Pick a time that most pros are off from their own seasons. Include Tennis, Hockey, Volleyball, and Swimmers too. The ideas just keep popping for this event.
How about 100 riders with 10 teams of 10 celebrities each? Stars could drop out just like the Tour de France whenever they couldn't make it any longer. Some retired sports celebs that stay in cycling shape could enter also. I don't know maybe this sounds crazy? To me I'd rather watch this than more Poker or Strongman competitions.
Let me know what you think. I also need some people to respond so when some larger company takes this idea and runs with it, I will have proof for the courtroom that I invented the idea myself. Plus it'd be nice to hear other ideas for this Bike Race from the smart bloggers at Yardbarker.
