As the three NBA icons Michael Jordan, John Stockton and David Robinson prepare to be inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame, I couldn't be happier. I'm not exaggerating when I say that these three living legends changed my life. It really hits home to see all three make Springfield together, and here I share my experience :
1. Michael Jordan : When I first started playing basketball in 1993, Michael Jordan was already the greatest of all time. I'm aware of Jordan's shortcomings, and even as a middle schooler, I wasn't so naive as to think the guy was perfect, but Jordan was the guy who gave me a dream.
It wasn't about becoming a future pro or anything like that - it was simply about being inspired to be your best and love what you do, and MJ's mastery and competitiveness instilled those qualities in me.
2. John Stockton : Stock taught me how to be savvy. I first noticed his incredible feel for the game when I watched him play against my idol MJ back in the 1997 and 1998 NBA Finals. Little did I know that by 2003, I would be imitating him in pickup games and that he would replace Jordan as my favorite old school NBA player.
Part of it was by necessity - I could imitate Stock hell of a lot easier than I could Jordan - but observing how the Jazz point guard made his way around the court helped me become savvier, tougher and more unselfish overall as a man.
3. David Robinson : I don't draw much basketball-wise from The Admiral, but Robinson inspires me the most these days as far as bettering myself as an overall person.
With his excellence as an athlete, military officer and overall human being, David Robinson is one of the greatest renaissance men in our world. With the way he continues his charitable works long after his NBA career has ended, this is the guy I find myself looking up to as I advance in life.
P.S. With Michael Jordan now officially elected into the Hall of Fame, don't you think it's time to retire #23 from basketball?
