PLAYERS: J.R. Smith
TEAMS: New York Knicks

From Los That Sports Blog:

According to a report from NiuBBall.com, recently added Knicks guard J.R. Smith was fined over $1 million for missing practices with his Chinese Basketball team Zhejiang Chouzhou.

A report published by NetEase states that Smith had $1.06 million deducted from his salary over the course of the season for missing practices. Most of the missed practices came during preseason.

“This was the arrangement when he came to the team,” said Zhao Bing, the general manager for Zhejiang Chouzhou. “Every practice we let him know. If he expressed to us that he wasn’t going to come to practice, we’d tell him that in accordance with our contract, we’re deducting money from your salary. And he’d always get back to us with, ‘Whatever. If you’re going to take it, then just take it.’”

So not only was Smith accused of faking injuries and abusing the amenities offered by his overseas team, he was also pulling an Allen Iverson? Well, not according to Smith, who denied the report that he was fined that amount by his former team. "Not even close," Smith said Wednesday.

Smith was recently signed by the Knicks for a prorated portion of the $2.5 million veteran’s mid-level exception to solidify their back court. Hopefully Smith has learned a thing or two about saving money.

  • Don't play for China.
  • i feel that i will never find love either and i have never been after any ones money i just wanted to be happy. I hate that you are going through it too. life it full of surprises sometimes.
  • What I've read about you thus far (even though I'm sure we haven't met)says, "Come after me for my money." Your site for example, "Wealthybar.com" "You don't have to be a millionaire, but you can meet one" C'mon man! If I were a woman and a 'Golddigger', you would be a prime target. How about forgetting the fact that you are wealthy, be honest with yourself first, by knowing what you want, without settling for anything or anyone, setting some standards for yourself first, then go out and look for that soulmate, whether through the internet, the supermarket, library, church, or your place of worship, a museum or your local coffee shop. You'll notice I didn't recommend the clubs or bars, that's because that's where you'll find the women you would want to take what you have. Listen my man, I'm not wealthy but I know what I'm looking for in a woman. (I use my mother has the standard bearer) and if they don't measure up, I'm gone! I refuse to settle and so should you!
  • How does this relate to J.R Smith being fined?
  • Ditto
  • hey, since you don't date men for their money, I make tacos for a living. Do you want me to send my picture too?
  • hey love(:

  • Whats up, Love?
  • I think you should stick to posting your pic on f/b!
  • Maybe in your spare time, "Dr." you should try donating it to a worthy cause instead of posting your wahhhh story on a sports blog. Obviously, you have time, use it wisely. Thank you, and have a great day.
  • haha
  • Money can't buy you love..........I would rather live pennyless with a true love. (I'm single, 41, no children and have my own business)
  • I dont think you're going to find a girlfriend by posting comments on a sports blog...
ps -how did you get past the spam filter?
  • I don't think you're going to find a girlfriend by posting your sob story on a sports blog

ps -how did this get past the spam filter?
  • Let's get this straight... I AM NOT A KNICKS FAN!! I'm in South Florida, so it is the HEAT all the way. I was at the Heat/Knicks game the other night. New York with Linsanity was being manhandled. J.R. Smith was huge that night. While I disagree with him not honoring his contract... I can definitely see why New York went and got him. He was all over the floor making plays that were not visible on television. If he had not been out there... The Heat would have smoked them by more than 25 points. That was obivious to all who were at the game. Besides that... I think he "blows".
  • Really. I foolishly lived in China for 7 years and this story sounds real.
  • You're blaming China? The guy is breaking his contract and hardly the first American prima donna inflicted on a foreign country (Oh, and I'm an American who's lived in Hong Kong, Shanghai and Beijing for 30 years).
  • we are talking about practice right.....not a game we are talking about practice.

in all seriousness it is funny how most athletes file for bankruptsy after retirement

  • how much do you think he has spent on tattoos
  • Good for China... These thungs new to learn to respect thse how pay their $$$.. In the NBA, we beg players to come back then offer them a new contract....
  • Thugs? Perhaps you could use a little self improvement also, how about starting with a spelling class.
  • Crusader is still smarter than you jckkllr. So don't talk.
  • Are you trying to say; These thugs need to learn how to respect those who pay their money? Thought so, WOW.
  • or perhaps we should fine the thugs that can't spell or use correct english when they write. (you did mean thugs not thungs and need not new right?) UMMMM!
  • AMEN with what you are trying to say. The players in the US are spoiled rotten little brats who can get away with anything. Miss pratices just because you want to??? Have dirty drug tests??? You are done - no 2nd chances!!!! We want good role models for our children!!!
  • in the words of the great charles barkely,"i do not get paid to be a role model. I get paid to put a round ball through a round hoop.
  • 1st off your an idiot for wanting your kids to look up to sports figures as role models, why not a doctor or a lawyer or even yourself u moron.Stop worshiping celebrities be a role model to your own damn kids people.
  • These comments below are ridiculous. This isn't an english class to stop acting like it is.
  • Smith -- the deceitful, dishonest, lazy, arrogant, ugly American. Just the image that we want to portray in the world.
  • Has nothing to do with his being American. He made personal decisions and now he must suffer the consequences, personally. Dont make it about where he is from.
  • Further, His decisions have nothing to do with his physical appearence. Stick to the issues at hand sir.
  • Prozack, you obviously don't understand the term "ugly American".
  • I believe those are all character defects.. L2Read.
  • has absolutely NOTHING to do with his nationality. people like you make me sick
  • Yes, it does, this is NBA (American) culture in action. American sprinting is the same.
  • LMAO... American is already portrayed has "the deceitful, dishonest, lazy, arrogant, ugly America way before him , get it right boy.
  • The fact of the matter is Smith realized he made a huge mistake signing with the crappy ass Chinese team. He probably felt like he was playing with high school players, that is how bad they are compared to American players.
  • Its funny how igorants is bliss,America was stolen from Indians(NATIVE AMERICANS!!!)America was built on blood sweat and tears of Black slaves who did not receive rights until the 50's way after it was said that "all men are created equal",and we all know that is a fact but most choose to be ignorant to the fact then talk about America like are **** dont stink.
  • Smith's a punk. He left the court in Denver when he was yanked from a game by Karl. I believe there were stories about his family getting involved in a couple of brawls in the stands in China. As good a signing as Lin was by the Knicks, this clown is bad. The Iverson comparison was good. Sounds like they have the same financial advisor.
  • Not excusing what JR did, it was wrong. BUT, I have had dealings with the China on a business level, and they may seem quiet, and meek, but they will try to take everything you have, and do it while smiling and bowing...(ART OF WAR) Don't do business with them. They knew the type of person/player JR was before signing him, but they wanted to boost their attendance by using him to make more money, then want to complain to us like we have THUGS and VILLAINS who don't follow rules. They used HIM, and HE used them! I think we should always back our citizens like every other country does. JR may be different from us, but he's still American. He may not have the look and background like a lot of us, be he has a craft, and is good at it. How many of us can say that?
  • You "had dealings with the China on a business level", when did you learn English?
  • We do have THUGS and VIllains that don't follow rules. The NBA is full of them.
  • How many of us can say we have a craft and are good at it? Stop aggrandizing these fools that can put a ball through a hoop well. The NBA hasn't been fun since the 90s.
  • Thank u! What makes J.R. a thug anyway? None of u on here know him personaly to call him a thug.Is it because hes black with tattoos, u people are just racist morons waiting for an opportunity to talk ****!I hope all u racist have mixed grand children. Can u hate an innocent baby cause of there race?
  • One of the reasons young men like JR continue to behave like that is because individuals like yourself keep making excuses for them. If he signed an agreement with China, Australia, Nike, the local supermarket, he should live up to it, period! An agreement is an agreemnet. If they had violated their end of the deal, I would be the first to empathize with JR, but refusing to go to practice and responding with "Whatever" that's unacceptable. It seems his attitude is a chronic one and that he will take it wherever he goes in life. I hope they sue him for 5 million. C'mon son.....GROW UP!
  • he is an idiot and a embarassing person from america.he is over rated and over paid,he thinks he is better than anyone else as they all do.Just because he is black and an athlete,he thinks he is better, boy is he wrong, there are many white guys who are alot better player then he is.
  • You said there plenty of white guys better than j.r.smith name a few, dont worry ill wait. You cant cause your just being racist making a race issue out of nowhere. If you dont like black people then dont watch NBA watch NHL you simple minded peon.
  • I don't think this is about racism at all. I am not racist, however, who wants the drama in a professional sport?? I watch NHL because there is no drama. These are top athletes doing what not a lot of other atletes can do. They are professional, and show a lot of class off the ice. Don't call someone a "simple minded moron" because their view is different than yours. Please don't try to throw hockey in and compare it with basketball, because there is no comparison. P.S. Black people play hockey too ;)
  • Please. That's one of the biggest jokes out there. The NHL is notorious known for their players partying out of control. It's just an under reported story because no one gives a damn about the NHL. Much like using PEDs in the NFL. 25 years ago Len Bias was a big story, hell the NHL has a story like that happens every other year now in the NHL. Player (insert name) dies from a heart attack or some odd reason "alone" in his hotel room.
  • Not a joke, have you ever played hockey? I doubt it, so while they may party, they are smarter about it and you don't see them looking for limelight! Drama..basketball-Hockey..athletes!

JR Smith Makes Knicks Debut With Questionable Haircut
