The Los Angeles Lakers have a history of immortalizing franchise greats with statues outside of Staples Center. Well, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar should start preparing to make a speech.

The Los Angeles Times is reporting that the Lakers will unveil a statue featuring Abdul-Jabbar outside of Staples Center at some point during the 2012-13 season. The team already has statues honoring Magic Johnson, Chick Hearn and Jerry West on Star Plaza at Staples Center, and the 19-time All-Star center was obviously next in line.

Abdul-Jabbar won five championships with the Lakers and two of his six MVP awards. He is also the NBA’s all-time leading scorer (38,387 points), is third in rebounds (17,440), was named Sports Illustrated’s Sportsman of the Year in 1985, was named one of the NBA’s 50 Greatest Players and was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1995.

His number 33 jersey has also been retired by the Lakers.

Abdul-Jabbar is one of the best players in NBA history and was already a three-time NBA MVP when he arrived in LA before the 1975 season. But he elevated himself into a superstar thanks to his time on the biggest stage with the Lakers.

He helped the Lakers win five NBA championships and combined with Magic Johnson to be one of the best one-two punches in league history.

Abdul-Jabbar deserves his statue and it will look great outside the Staples Center alongside Johnson. We’re fairly confident in guessing that he’ll be posed shooting his patented sky-hook.
