BOSTON — As the ball bounced off Paul Pierce‘s knee and out of bounds, ending the Celtics’ chances of a last-second, game-tying shot, the Celtics could only take solace in the knowledge that, finally, a lack of intensity would not be their downfall. This time, the Celtics played hard the whole way but failed to execute in the clutch. They turned the ball over on two crucial last-minute possessions, making it much easier for the New York Knicks to secure their 89-86 victory than the final score suggested. This constituted progress for a Boston team on a five-game losing streak. Celtics coach Doc Rivers, who has made no secret of his disgust with his players’ inconsistency, was left to offer platitudes about moral victories. “We lost the game and I thought both teams played hard,” Rivers said. “I don’t think either team played great, but if I saw that effort every night, I’d be happy.” Four days after tearing into his team following a lethargic loss in Detroit, Rivers played good cop....

Why we watch Paul Pierce

I did a little writing for The Classical series “Why We Watch,” focusing on Paul Pierce’s years of faking us all out.   Here’s a little bit of it: Your eyes tell you that Pierce is not doing those things. Even as he backpedals and blows kisses to the Madison Square Garden crowd after yet another masterful one-man Broadway show, your eyes tell you he’s not shooting as well...

Cheerios items a no-go at Garden

A surprising number of Cheerios-related items were confiscated by security during the Knicks-Celtics game in Boston, the first since the KG-Carmelo dustup.

Melo vs. KG: Preparing for Round 2 on Thursday

If you haven’t heard about the incident between Carmelo Anthony and Kevin Garnett when the Knicks played the Celtics at the Garden on January 7th, which led to Melo getting suspended for a game, then I’m not too sure where you’ve been. After Melo and Garnett were playing very rough against each other all game, including picking up a double technical, Melo went screaming towards...

Paul Pierce not named to All-Star team

Eastern Conference All-Star reserves: Chris Boshtrich, Tyson Chandler, Joakim Noah, Paul George, Luol Deng, Jrue Holiday, and Kyrie Irving will join Rondo, Wade, 'Melo, LeBron and KG who were voted as starters. I think many of us knew this was a distinct possibility. The Celtics record isn't really worthy of having 3 all-stars. That said, Paul Pierce's numbers are remarkably...

A Celtics state of mind-pushing for change

After losing their fifth straight against the New York Knicks, Rajon Ronsdo said an interesting thing in his post game interview, "Paul Pierce can't be the only one drawing fouls."  Paul Pierce is considered to be Mr. Celtic; the lone active Celtic player to have more than a fleeting memory of Red Auerbach.  Pierce cut his NBA teeth in the tradition of what it means...

Paul Pierce: Celtics Lack Mental Toughness

“I think that’s the one thing this team lacks, that mental toughness, man. When we lose our confidence, I’ve never been on teams like that. We got to stay together, we got to play with confidence. “Yeah, definitely, it hurts me to say that. It’s like I really sometimes don’t believe it….We get down on ourselves. We got to go out there and believe we can win every game...

Carmelo Anthony Brings Personal Bodyguard With Him to Boston for Rematch With Celtics

The last time the Celtics and Knicks met, it was Kevin Garnett who may have needed some personal protection from Carmelo Anthony. This time, the New York star is ensuring his own safety. Anthony will bring his own bodyguard with him for Thursday’s matchup at the TD Garden, according to the New York Daily News. The reasoning Anthony’s employing the extra security detail is not...

Knicks 89, Celtics 86

BOSTON -- The first meeting between Carmelo Anthony and Kevin Garnett since their nasty encounter on Jan. 7 in New York turned into just another night of misery for the floundering Celtics. Anthony, suspended for a game for going out to the Boston bus after Garnett's alleged comments, scored 28 points and grabbed nine rebounds to lead the New York Knicks to a 89-86 victory...

Carmelo Anthony accompanied by personal bodyguard in Boston

Thursday night is the first time Carmelo Anthony and the Knicks will see Kevin Garnett and the Boston Celtics since KG’s infamous “Cheerios” comments during their game at Madison Square Garden on January 7th. This time the game is in Boston, and despite Anthony and Garnett’s claims of their beef being resolved, Melo still isn’t taking chances with Celtics’ fans. That...

Another Year Another Ride

The Celtics are all to familiar with the emotions of "a day at the park" Being a Celtics fan for a season is almost like going to Six Flags, or any other amusement park, for the day. The anticipation to get there is unbearable and all you can do is sit and think about the possible outcomes of a day at the park. You finally get there and reality hits you, theres a lot of...

Why Tyson Chandler Should Be an All-Star

As we all know Tyson Chandler deserved to be the starting Center in the All-Star game representing the Eastern Conference..  Kevin Garnett took that spot when the fans voted and he was announced as the starter in the East. Tyson Chandler’s numbers were substantially better than Kevin Garnett’s, but the fans still voted other wise. Although Tyson wasn’t selected to start, his...

Recap: Celtics let one slip away, literally

Sigh. The Celtics clawed their way back from a 10-point deficit in the 4th quarter only to fumble the ball out of bounds on two critical possessions late in the game. It was those  mental mistakes, courtesy Jason Terry and Paul Pierce, that cost them a chance at victory over the Knicks. The final score: NY 89 Bos 86. The reason behind tonight’s loss was the shooting. The Celtics...

Comments from the Other Side - Hawks 1/25

Well, that wasn't fun.  It's becoming clear that the bench is finally coming around but now the starters are slumping.  The second unit gave us that big lead in the second quarter and then it went away when the starters came back in.  But there's progress.  We  at least got one great half of basketball.    One thing that always strikes me is all the complaints...
