The near and distant future of the Sacramento Kings franchise may be up in the air at the moment, but one thing that is not up for debate is how Keith Smart, the team’s head coach, is a hero of sorts as well as a staunch protector of children. During Sacramento’s game against the Golden State Warriors at Oakland’s ORACLE Arena on Wednesday, Smart snatched an errant pass from Warriors star Steph Curry as it bore down upon a child seated in the front row near the Kings bench, mere moments before the ball would have struck the lad. Nice reflexes, Coach Smart. And his heroic deeds must have served as an inspiration for his squad, as the Kings defeated the Warriors 105-98 on its home court. But that’s what heroes do. They inspire through their actions by preventing innocent bystanders from becoming unwitting victims who subsequently are injured by errantly passed basketballs. At least that’s the case when the do-gooder’s valiant deeds happen to occur while standing on the sideline near a basketball court. Have no fear, young fans seated courtside while attending Kings basketball games: As long as Keith Smart is near, you will be safe. Well done, good sir.
