Kobe Bryant limps away with injury in Lakers loss.
When the #Vino returns to Atlanta next year, it’s going to be a display of scorched-earth scoring fury.
In the final moments of the 96-92 loss to the Atlanta Hawks on Wednesday night, Kobe Bryant took a fadeaway jumper at the baseline that clanged off the rim. While the shot missed, LA fans must be up in arms that he didn’t get sent to the free-throw line–there was a tough no-call as Hawks shooting guard Dahntay Jones stepped into Kobe’s body on defense. Ultimately, he came down awkwardly on Jones’ foot, spraining his ankle and putting him out indefinitely.
While x-rays have come up negative for structural damage, Kobe is revered for his ability to force through painful injuries that would incapacitate other players. If he’s not on the court, then it can be safely considered a serious injury.
After the game he took to twitter with his protests against the no call, saying: “#dangerousplay that should have been called. Period.” He also emailed Yahoo! News’ Adrian Wojnarnowski, saying that Jones “threw his hip and lower body into mine on the shot. That’s a foul with 100 percent certainty. Dirty and dangerous play. Doesn’t belong in the game.”
Jones has already refuted claims that the play was intentional, but it did seem reminiscent of Bruce Bowen’s technique for kicking out his leg at opponent’s jumpers, spraining their ankles off his foot. Known primarily for lockdown defense as much as his dirty play, his technique is considered to have slowed the careers of Vince Carter and Steve Francis after seriously damaging their ankles.
The implications for the Lakers are dire. Prior to the injury, Kobe was having one of his usual high volume, high scoring games, tallying 31 points on 11-31 shooting. It will be difficult to replace his scoring, especially with fellow anchor Pau Gasol also out with injury, but Kobe will be missed the most as a facilitator. Point guard Steve Nash and big man Dwight Howard haven’t fully developed a chemistry, and Kobe was frequently notching over 10 assists when his teammates couldn’t get going.
Caught in a tight playoff race with the Utah Jazz, they have a slightly easier schedule but will need big performances from bench players to make up for the loss of Kobe. The recently healthy Dwight Howard will also have to take over both as a leader and a scorer if the Lakers are to have any chance at continuing the remarkable turnaround they’ve cobbled together late in the season.
Regardless of how the Lakers’ season goes, one thing can be counted on: when Kobe gets a chance to play the Hawks again, he’s going to put on a show.
“I can’t get my mind past the fact that I’ve got to wait a year to get revenge,” Bryant fumed to reporters after the game.

For years now people have tried to dissect and analyze what exactly is going on in Kobe Bryant’s head. However as with many super star athletes, as years progress you start to adhere to the fact that there isn’t a formula to their masterminds, unless you’re Dr. Mbogo.
