From Larry Brown Sports:

Kobe Bryant suffered a sprained ankle at the end of the Los Angeles Lakers' 96-92 loss to the Atlanta Hawks on Wednesday, and the Lakers star thinks he was injured intentionally.

Bryant was hurt attempting a game-tying jumper on the baseline. He was fading away from the basket as he shot the ball, and he landed on the leg of Hawks guard Dahntay Jones.

Bryant went down immediately and was in pain. He left the game and had X-rays which were negative. The Lakers said after the game that Bryant was out indefinitely with a "severe" ankle sprain.

The story gets much more interesting from there. Bryant said after the game that he thought Jones hurt him intentionally like Jalen Rose did in the 2000 NBA Finals. Rose, then with the Indiana Pacers, stuck his foot out to intentionally hurt Bryant during Game 2 of the Finals, causing Bryant to miss the next game with a sprained ankle.

Below is video of Bryant calling Jones' injury intentional, and Rose, currently an NBA analyst for ESPN, admitting that he intentionally injured Bryant:

"He Jalen Rose'd me," Bryant said of Jones after the game. "I just think players need to be made conscious of it, and officials need to protect shooters. Period. I can't get my mind past the fact that I have to wait a year to get my revenge."

Below is video of Rose's play on Bryant in the 2000 Finals:

Jones heard that Bryant felt he was injured intentionally, so the Hawks guard defended himself via his Twitter account:

The problem is that Jones has a history of trying to injure Bryant. During the 2009 Western Conference Finals between the Lakers and Denver Nuggets, Jones stuck his leg out to try to trip Bryant:

The 2009 incident was pointed out to Jones. He addressed it via his Twitter account:

Bryant did not back down from accusing Jones of injuring him intentionally. He said over Twitter that Jones "knows what he did."

  • Jones is a liar. It was an obvious foul where he gave Kobe no room to come down. He is a dirty player and the referee's allowed it. They should be held accountable. The whole game was called miserably by incompetent referees.
  • Waaaah. Cry me a river, build me a bridge and get over it, Doughby a$$-kissing POS Faker lover...
  • Come on guys, it does not matter what kobe does its always a file against him.He never files..Lebron Shaq---Reggie Miller--can go on and on. The stars come to play and they want their opponent to stand around and let them showboat. Really..I've watched a lot of BB--will be 75 this Aug. thought I would hang out while recuperating from hip surgery. Keep on debating--I love it.
  • Definitely gotta agree with you. Jones didnt jump straight up to contest the shot, he ran INTO and invaded Kobe's entitled landing space while he was in the air, giving him nowhere to land. If he had done the EXACT same thing to LeBron, it would've resulted in a flagrant and either a fine or suspension for trying endangering a defenseless player in the air. The officials decidedly blew this and several other BLATANTLY OBVIOUS calls all night. This league is becoming a joke and any player or coach who calls attention to it gets fined. Shameful and embarrassing.
  • Look whose crying you. You are so far from ever being as great as Kobe. The claim to fame is to down grade him behind no identity as if it would matter. Just like you gave your opinion he is entitled to his get over it LOL
  • I buy almost everything except food and clothing from online auctions. .Most people aren't aware of the almost unbelievable deals that they can get from online auction sites. Ther site that has best deals is savebang,,CoM
and I checked with the Better Business Bureau and was told that it is all legitHow they can sell gift
cards, laptops, cameras, and all kinds of goodies that we all want for 50-90% off, I don't know. I do
know that I bought my son an iPad there for less than $100 and my husband a $250 Loews gift
cards for $48.Why would I even think about shopping anyplace else?
    .
  • go fuckkk yourself
  • I can't determine intention for sure, but I know this, it was in fact a dangerous play. Jones didn't jump to block Bryant, he just moved his body under him. Anyone knows that's a dangerous play for a shooter.
  • in any level of basketball...you got to give the player a place to land...jones step under kobe...
  • In the words of Zig Ziglar (RIP), this is a classic example of "losers limp." Bet if the shot would have went in, Kobe would have bounced right up like the b-ball he dribbles.
  • Doubt it. But i guess we'll see if he misses any games.
  • Kobe's whining again, as usual! He faded away and Jones in an attempt to get a hand up jumped inward toward the ball, so what? Does Kobe think that whenever he has the ball and is going to shoot it that all defenders should just step aside and let him shoot because he's Kobe. Get over it you big cry baby whiner. If the truth be told just about every time you shoot you kick your leg out to create more room for yourself, that's a foul too that should be called. Now you have a built in excuse as to why the Lakers won't make the playoffs instead of the real reason...you don't make any teammates better because you're only concerned about Kobe. 33 shots you took in that game, really? 11 for 33, now that's some great shooting. Enjoy your lounge chair as you watch the NBA play-offs.
  • It was a dirty play.
And you would only know how dirty, if you were the one executing the dirty play, or if you were the one taking the shot.
Has nothing to do with whining.
  • Kobe is the crying baby of the NBA.....If he is out indefinitely with a spained ankle the NBA would be a better sport.
  • I have no skin in this game. I refuse to watch the NBA. But, this looks intentional to me. And, especially since this player has a history of this kind of thing. Players high fiving each other while another player is down???? Classy - really classy. This is one example of why I (and tens of thousands of others) no longer have anything to do with the NBA. I'd think that action is warranted. But, this pitiful league will do zero.
  • I agree. Kobe always kicks out the leg to get a call. This thought that you have to back off the shooter and give him room, this isn't the Allstar game. I also agree that if he made the shot or a foul was called, Kobe would be up and shooting the free ones. He's always been a cry baby!
  • Good luck with that thought process.
    Intentionally dirty.
I guess you've never played competitive basketball.
  • Oh, but I have played competitive basketball,oh wise one, for many years. And I have watched many Lakers games. That is a staple move for Kobe, kicking out the leg on a fallaway jumper. He does it on most 3 point shots also. You have probably never played much defense in basketball, guarding close and contesting shots is hard work, maybe that is why you don't understand the concept.
  • Oh wise one, I have played competitive basketball for years. You obviously are a huge Kobe (Laker) fan. That is understandable. But Kobe kicks out his leg on most closely guarded shots, even 3 pointers, trying to draw the foul. His theatrics cost him this time. And you probably think guarding close and contesting shots is dirty, because it's hard work! So you most likely avoid it!
  • I could buy Bryant's whining if he wasn't intentionally trying to draw that foul too..... Keep watching the shot, Kobe kicks his leg out looking for contact. Jones may have stepped into Kobe a bit far and probably would have drawn the foul if Kobe didn't initiate contact.
  • Kobe = whiny bitch. He demands room to land, but he has no compunctions about kicking out with his legs at opposing players when he jumps.
  • I see nothing wrong with the play other than a potential offensive foul. Jones and Bryant are both moving full speed and have to stop instantaneously. Jones then made what I consider a half-hearted attempt at defense, but that is still just defense.

Kobe did not land on Jones' foot; the injury was due to how he landed on the floor. Had Jones put his foot under Kobe, then maybe yes I would cry foul and dirty play too. However, this play/injury could have been attributed to the fact that he tried to kick Jones with his off foot and didn't have proper balance or 20,000 other factors.

Anyone saying that Kobe "deserved/had every right to" that space has clearly never played basketball. Both players have "every right" to that space. It doesn't say "Kobe's spot" on the floor. This is part of the game and Kobe is just looking for excuses why he missed the shot.

Watch any game featuring the Lakers or Heat and tell me that Kobe and LeBron don't get away with murder when they are on defense and then the slightest sneeze at them is considered a foul.

    I say good no call.
  • You're obviously an idiot.
Try playing once in a while, and maybe you'll understand how dirty a play that was.
  • Its funny how you people are calling others babys' if you watch basketball you would know that this was definately a foul, And you go land the way he did on his ankle and then go call him a crybaby , because i guarantee you will cry out like a bitc* , I admit he does kik his legs but very damn rarely has he ever hit someone with it, Lakers probably will loose vs the pacers ... Most likely i see a loosing streak heading towards our way..
  • I agree 100%
These idiots who only know about carpal tunnel syndrome, think rolling an ankle like that is child's play.
It was an intentionally dirty play, by a player who has made dirty plays before.
  • If this happened to any other player it would not even merit one comment. Officials don't call the kick out so why should they worry about what happens when the offender comes down. Now he does deserve to be punished because he screwed up the script, LA makes miraculous run to the NBA finals to face the Heat and bring in piles of revenue and viewership for the NBA
  • Raymer...It's not that the injury didn't hurt. Sometimes a sprained ankle can actually hurt more than a broken one. The cry baby connotation is because that's all Kobe seems to do is whine and complain all the time about everything. Watch sometime when he misses a shot, as he's going back on defense he'll be complaining in the ref's ear on almost every miss, like hey I was fouled why wasn't there a whistle...especially when driving to the basket and he doesn't make it. Apparently Kobe thinks he gets fouled on every one of his misses. Nobody wants to see any player get hurt but Kobe gives more than he gets with kicking that leg out to create space on every jumper. How many times is he called for a foul on that move. So, I say, Kobe pull up your big boy panties, start rehabbing that ankle and maybe you'll get back sooner than expected and stop your whining and crying ya douche.
  • When it comes to sportsmanship the NBA has to be the worst, players and coaches. Disgusting. Bunch of overpaid spoiled brats that need to grow up and act their age not their IQ's. If this was a dirty play it isn't the first and won't be the last. Bet Kobe has made a few of his own.
  • Oh, I feel so sorry for kbitch. They should stop the regular season right now, until he is ready to play. That's the only fair thing to do. I'll bet that girl in Colorado agrees with me, even though he made her rich beyond her dreams.
  • Waaaaaaaaaah! Kobe's so upset he hasn't been able to force sodomy on a woman all day.
  • He did jump into him instead of straight up. But Bryant also kicked out his leg. But with all that, I don't see an intent to try to hurt Bryant. There was definitely a foul on the play....the question is who fouled whom?
  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r0T08-gJVcc to all the idiots who think that its clean..
  • you people are idiots kobe has took that same exact shot many times over way bigger and waaaay better players than dat bum,he knew what he was doing! getting his ass busted da whole game ,couldnt stop da man,,,dirty player. and ya'll talking bout crying my boy got FIVE RINGS cry babbies dont get dem!!!so catch up suckas
  • Comments on this story are lead by Kobe haters because he is very good and successful and trolls of course. I don't have a favorite team in the NBA so I watched it not favoring anyone and it is obvious he walked into Kobe.
  • i see nothing dirty at all. you jump to block the shot. Jones jumped towards where the ball was leaving the shooters hand. yeah, his momentum took him into Bryant a bit. so? happens all day long in every game. just sounds whiney to me. play ball.
  • Momentum? That's laughable.
A lot of momentum, when you're walking.
I guess we'll have to wait 10 years for this guy to admit that be intentionally hurt Kobe too.
And for all u idiots who say there was no foul, I guess the league deciding that the refs missed it, must really drive u nuts.
    Trolls.
  • Jalen Rose should be taken off the air for his comments about intentionally injuring a player. My kids will never watch his pre-game or anyother show he is on! Besides he is a week link on the programs.
  • Kobe(Ball Hog)Bryant is such a WUSS. Get your revenge by kickin thier ass next time. He's stupid for saying the things he did.The Flakers won't win another ring with him and the supporting clowns,er cast. ;-)
