The current NBA season comes to a close tonight, but Los Angeles Lakers superstar Kobe Bryant is already thinking ahead to the impending free agency of teammate Dwight Howard. While the Lakers struggled with during the year to establish consistent play with Kobe and Howard on the court together, that doesn’t mean Kobe is ready to see the center head to another team for next year. He realizes that Howard is still the best in the league at his position. “Those guys are hard to find, they don’t grow on trees,” Bryant said, according to the Los Angeles Times. When you have someone like that with his talent level, you have to be able to keep him and lock him in with this franchise.” Bryant wants an active role in negotiations with Howard, and said so earlier this month when he said that he wanted ‘the final word’ with him. Bryant isn’t waiting until the last-minute though, as he expects to keep tabs on Howard during the process. “I’ve spoken to him maybe a couple of weeks ago, just to check in with him,” Bryant said. “I haven’t spoken to him since.
