Needless to say, this one will hurt for the Clippers.
Leading by three with possession of the ball and just seven seconds remaining on the game clock, it seemed all-but over. The Clippers would inbound, make their free throws, and that would be that.
They’d improve to 20-9, take over sole possession of second place in the West and snap the Spurs’ nine-game winning streak in the process.
Only problem, you see, is that’s not quite how things worked out.
On a truly bizarre play, with Chris Paul flashing towards the midcourt line, Ryan Gomes (who played a grand total of eight minutes), inbounded. Paul, with all of his momentum carrying him towards the center of the court, helplessly flipped the ball into the air to avoid the over-and-back call.
And there, waiting for it with open arms, was San Antonio’s best three-point shooter, Gary Neal, who calmly collected the ball and buried the game-tying three.
