At Lakers Nation, we have definitely felt the effects of the lockout as, we the fans, would usually be talking about what just happened at the summer league, our new draft picks and any new free agents who are on the brink of signing with the team. Instead, we are looking to overseas for stories and and pro-am leagues for highlights.

The one thing many have forgotten are the real victims of this lockout – the Lakers staff. As noted from earlier this summer, there has been a huge turnover of staff and many believe that it has been because the Lakers understand the lockout is going to last a very long time, so the business decision was to avoid paying salaries to a staff that would literally have nothing to do.

No free agencies papers to file. No teams to scout. No players to heal.

Yes, it doesn’t feel right and I’m sure we’re not the only ones that feel it. A decision made by team captains Kobe Bryant and Derek Fisher, the Lakers decided to flip the script this year with their $604,000 playoff bonus to provide financial relief to the staff that has helped them win so much in recent years.

They’re a huge part of our team,” said Walton, who did not specify how much he gave. “When they got laid off, this was a way to let them know that we appreciate them. It was something to help them through what was already a tough time. – Luke Walton [LA Times]

Luke Walton also added on top of that by providing financial gifts towards the training staff, who some would argue, Luke spent more time with them than his actual teammates in recent years.

It’s good to see the players understanding the situation and providing a class act assist for the people that make everything happen.
