The Detroit Pistons have eight new faces on their roster this season but they're dealing with a familiar problem. Outside shooting. Specifically, poor 3-point shooting. The Pistons are among the NBA's least effective 3-point shooters for the third straight season and that has to change if they want to give themselves a better chance to win, according to coach Maurice Cheeks. The Pistons are making 27.7 percent of their 3-point attempts this season entering tonight's home game vs. Oklahoma City to rank 26th in the NBA in that department. The only teams behind them in 3-point accuracy are Utah (22.5), Oklahoma City (24.7), Chicago (25.4) and Charlotte (26.6). The Pistons are making an average of 5.8 from behind the 3-point line this season to rank 24th, ahead of Utah (4.0), Charlotte (4.2), Chicago (4.5), Boston (4.8), Oklahoma City (5.0) and Memphis (5.2). "I think we need outside shooting," Cheeks said Thursday. "For us, I don't think we can keep posting, posting, posting and not make outside shots. We have to start making some." Big man Josh Smith is the Pistons' leader in 3-pointers with seven in 28 attempts (.250). Chauncey Billups is next at 6-for-16 (.375) and none of other Pistons have more than three in four games. The Pistons (2-2) picked Kentavious Caldwell-Pope with the eighth overall pick in this year's NBA draft to help with the outside shooting but so far he's 2-for-5 on 3-pointers during 49 minutes in three games. Last season, the Pistons were in the bottom third of the NBA in 3-pointers per game with 6.4 and two years ago they were 26th with an average of 4.8. They had a combined record of 54-94 those two seasons. Now, all that doesn't mean teams that don't make a lot of 3-pointers can't succeed. One of the NBA's worst 3-point shooting teams last season was the Memphis Grizzlies. They were last in the NBA in 3-pointers pre game with an average of 4.7 but they reached the Western Conference Finals before being swept the San Antonio Spurs.
