Golden State Warriors
Dirk Nowitzki had 24 points and nine rebounds, Delonte West added 21 points, seven assists and six rebounds, and the Dallas Mavericks beat the Portland Trail Blazers 97-94 on Friday night.
Shawn Marion had 17 points and 14 rebounds for defending champion Dallas, which has a 1 1/2-game lead over Denver and Houston for the sixth playoff spot in the Western Conference. Brandan Wright added 13 points and eight rebounds.
Nicolas Batum had 20 to lead the Blazers, Jamal Crawford scored 18 and Wesley Matthews had 15 points and seven rebounds.
The Mavericks jumped out to an early lead and held Portland at a comfortable distance for 3 1/2 quarters. Dallas was up by 24 points in the third and 16 points with less than four minutes to go in the game.
However, Portland put together a 19-5 run to pull to 93-89 with less than a minute remaining. Nowitzki then knocked in two free throws and Wright finished a fast break with a dunk to put the game away. Matthews made a meaningless 3-pointer at the buzzer.
Coming off a win at Golden State on Thursday night, the Mavericks have won the first two on their four-game road trip. With the playoffs approaching, Dallas' 39-year-old point guard Jason Kidd was inactive for the game to give him a rest.
Portland's playoff hopes have all but evaporated after the team announced on Thursday that All-Star forward LaMarcus Aldridge would need arthroscopic surgery on his hip and would be shut down for the rest of the season. Aldridge was eighth in the league in scoring at 21.7 points per game. J.J. Hickson started in place of Aldridge for the second straight game and had 13 points and 10 rebounds, his third double-double in three games.
Dallas jumped out to a 9-0 lead and held a 30-16 advantage after the first quarter. West scored to make it 38-18 early in the second. Batum scored 10 points in short order, keying a 21-7 Portland run to cut the lead to 45-39, but the Mavericks closed out the half with their own 11-2 run.
Dallas opened up the third on another run and eventually led 79-55.
NOTES: The Mavericks have held opponents to 100 points or fewer in all but 14 games this season. ... Portland finishes its regular-season home schedule on Wednesday. The Blazers are 20-12 at the Rose Garden this season. ... It was the Mavericks' first visit to Portland since Game 6 of the first round of the playoffs last year, which Dallas won to clinch the series en route to the NBA championship.

The only explanation Charles Barkley can come up with for Lamar Odom‘s short stint in Dallas is the 13-year veteran never got over his divorce with the Lakers. But it disgusts Barkley the Mavericks are on the hook for the remainder of Odom’s salary.
“I always pull for the players, but the fact that they’ve got to pay him, I think is a joke,” Barkley said during his...
SIMPLE CHRONIC HALITOSIS?
Vince Carter pulled the old burp-n-blow on the Grizzlies Rudy Gay last night. Gay is waiting to inbound the ball. Carter approaches, like a lion stalking its prey. Gay, unexpecting, like a gazelle. Then it happens. Carter attacks, letting that burp go, and blowing in Gay’s face. Gay responds by half gagging, half wincing, followed by looking to the referee for help. Carter can...
It was pretty funny when box scores made the same crack about Tim Duncan last month, and it was equally amusing when ESPN did it on Friday night. Yup, during the Mavericks-Blazers game, ESPN flashed to Jason Kidd sitting on the Dallas bench and showed a graphic saying he wasn’t playing that night because he’s old.
Though it seemed like a wisecrack, the description was actually...
Odom really should've just left the airport in this outfit.
It was much suspected that the main reason Lamar Odom and the Dallas Mavericks marriage lasted only a few days longer than Khloe’s sister Kim Kardashian’s was because Odom’s heart was still with in Los Angeles. Well, Odom’s outfit departing Dallas for good certainly didn’t help put those rumors to rest....

Years ago….on a rainy day in Seattle….electricity flowed through the air and began a process that turned Jason Terry into a deadly outside shooter with the bravery to put up any shot at any time. With the headband acquired from his mentor, Slick Watts….and the high socks that Jet saw his father wearing when he flipped through his dad’s old yearbook…MAGIC occurred. This...
Jason Terry doesn't deny the future has weighed on his mind at points throughout the season.
After the Dallas Mavericks swept them out of last year's postseason, the Los Angeles Lakers now could return the favor. Possibly doing it without Kobe Bryant might further build their confidence for a potential playoff rematch.
While coach Mike Brown is expected to return, Bryant's status remains up in the air as the surging Lakers go for a season sweep of the defending...
In the NBA's illustrious history, there have been many famous birds but an actual bird invaded last night's Portland Trail Blazers/Dallas Mavericks game.Check out this bird who decided to chill out on the shot clock after flying around during the first quarter:
After a close loss against a team they've been unable to beat this season, the Dallas Mavericks will try to bounce back against an opponent to which they seemingly can't lose.
If that's the case again Monday, the Utah Jazz can probably start making plans for the offseason.
The visiting Mavericks look for an eighth consecutive victory over the Jazz on Monday night, while...
In extremely important sports news to me, Cleveland.com is reporting that Cavaliers mascot “Moondog” was taken to the hospital after a good natured game of pre-game man-to-dog roughhousing got out of control and nearly cost him an eye. The injury came courtesy of Indiana Pacers forward David West, so of course when I read “Cavs mascot sent to hospital by West” my first...
