It sounds as if Portland Trail Blazers head coach Terry Stotts hasn't quite shut the door all the way on who will be included in his starting five when they opens up the regular season on the road against Phoenix on Oct. 30. When CSNNW.com asked him if any positions were up for grabs at Media Day on Monday Stotts responded with “probably not.” Now it's not a full blown announcement that spots are available to be had however he didn't say “no.” In reality the safe picks are Damian Lillard Wesley Matthews Nicolas Batum LaMarcus Aldridge and Robin Lopez being the first five onto the court. But if there were a position up for the taking you would have to believe it's the two-guard spot. Rookie CJ McCollum from all accounts has been spectacular in voluntary team workouts. General manager Neil Olshey says McCollum “scores like he breathes.” At 6-3 he's not the prototypical size of an off-guard though he doesn't see that as an issue. “I'm going to try (for the two-guard spot)” McCollum told CSNNW.com. “If coach feels I can best help this team playing the two I'm ready for it. I've been preparing all summer for both positions (point and two) so I think I'll be comfortable playing wherever he puts me at.” Olshey is high on this kid. “CJ is going to be a big-time player” he said. “I think what you saw in Summer League was flashes of just how good he is.” Matthews no stranger to competition is up for the challenge. He's never been handed anything. And he doesn't expect to be handed something this time around as well. “Competition breeds greatness” Matthews said. “I've been competitive my whole life. It doesn't matter who is at the position that I'm playing or who is projected to do what this or that I don't care. That doesn't matter to me. I've been challenged my whole life and I think I've matched it all the time.”
