HOUSTON -- You could see the emotion on Kevin McHale's face from the rafters Friday night. Seconds after McHale's Houston Rockets beat the Boston Celtics 101-89 at Toyota Center, Kevin Garnett sought out McHale and offered words that had McHale, who recently lost his 23-year-old daughter, Sasha, sobbing as he left the floor. "We go way back," McHale said. "He's always going to have a special place in my heart. We spent a ton of time together. It was great." McHale, of course, made the decision to draft Garnett straight out of high school in 1995 when McHale was the general manager of the Minnesota Timberwolves. Though such a decision would become commonplace over the next 10 years, at the time it was almost unheard of. Garnett was the first player in 20 years to be drafted straight from high school. McHale's eyes began to fill when he was asked about his embrace with Garnett. He kept the words between the two of them, but he did mention his daughter. "It's been a long day for me," he said.

Kevin Garnett And Kevin McHale Teach Us All A Lesson In Life

Everyone has their opinions on Kevin Garnett whether you are with or against him.  A lot of people say he is a fake tough guy and a phony.  I will tell you one thing from my view is that Kevin Garnett is a serious person.  He means what he says and says what he means.  This small moment in sports during a time like today is proof of many things - Kevin's (both) emotions,...

Why we need sports at times like this

When Kevin Garnett walked over to Kevin McHale, embraced him, and let the man who drafted him cry on his shoulder, it showed a couple of things. First, it was a glimpse into the type of person Kevin Garnett really is.  Sure, we see the fun little curse-filled post-game rants here and there, but no one outside of a Garnett locker room truly knows him, and we probably never will....

A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words

I included the video of Kevin McHale and Kevin Garnett embracing in the game recap, but I felt that this moment was so special it needed to be mentioned again. Yesterday was a very rough day for almost everyone in this country. Twenty precious children were killed in an act of senseless violence. Those of us who are parents and grandparents were hit especially hard by the tragedy...

Kevin Garnett hugs Kevin McHale after Rockets victory (Video)

After the Houston Rockets beat the Boston Celtics by the score of 101-89 on Friday night, Rockets head coach Kevin McHale had an emotional moment with Celtics forward Kevin Garnett during a postgame.McHale lost his daughter Sasha in November to Lupus and Kevin came over to give support to the man who drafted him in Minnesota:

Starting 5: A moment of silence

Every morning, we will give you five things from the night before in the NBA to start your day. 1: A mournful embrace The best moment of Friday's nights basketball games had nothing to do with a sport. Nothing to do with a dunk, a shot, a block, a defensive play, an assist. It was the simple act of humanity. One that resonated deeply on a dark day for the nation. Kevin...

Rockets 101, Celtics 89: Another inconsistent performance

Kevin Durant's shoes tonight.I watched the whole game, took notes and tweeted about it. But lamenting some poor interior defense and bad shooting just doesn’t feel right tonight. The lasting image I have from this game wasn’t Jeff Green’s fierce dunk or James Harden’s outrageously effective Eurostep. It was Kevin McHale, who recently lost his daughter, sobbing into Kevin...

Your Morning Dump… Where there’s nothing easy about being a big in Boston

Every morning, we compile the links of the day and dump them here… highlighting the big storyline. Because there’s nothing quite as satisfying as a good morning dump. The key to Boston’s trap being successful hinges heavily on the play of the Celtics big men, who are asked to come out and trap, and then hustle back to get in position to rebound or match back up with the man...

Celtics Locker Room Report: All About That Trapping Defense

The Celtics took 2OT to beat the Mavs 117-115 last night, but that doesn’t mean they didn’t like what they saw on the defensive end. Coach Doc Rivers, for one, was very pleased with the way the Celtics guarded the Mavs’ leading scorer, O.J. Mayo. Former defensive player of the year Kevin Garnett had a [...]

O.J. Mayo: ‘Would’ve been an honor to play’ for C's

Last season a trade that would have brought O.J. Mayo to Boston for Judas Shuttlesworth was basically squashed because Mayo claimed that he “doesn’t care about Boston’s banners.” After last night’s double overtime loss Mayo backpedaled faster than Rondo getting back on D, claiming that the accusation wasn’t true and he had no say in the matter due to lack of veto power...
