Los Angeles Lakers general manager Mitch Kupchak says the franchise has never discussed “tanking,” or losing on purpose to try and increase the number of lottery balls for draft prospects. “I’ve been here over 30 years, and it’s never something that’s been discussed or talked about,” he said to Lakers.com’s Mike Trudell. “When we go into every season – like most organizations – we’re excited about the season and think we can win a lot of games. Expectations vary, of course, but we are always going to do the best to win games that year, while also thinking about the following year. There is no way to believe that a team would, on purpose, do a terrible job in the summer and a terrible job in the draft because they want to lose games the next season. “Now, I’m sure once the season begins and things go or don’t go your way, the speculation as to what may happen if things continue may arise. We’ve been through years like that, and there’s never been a discussion in midseason in this building where ownership would say, “It’s best to lose.” That’s never

Giannis Antetokounmpo on seeing Kobe Bryant for first time: “He had that killer look”

The first thing you notice about 19-year-old rookie Giannis Antetokounmpo is his insanely long name. Next, his incredible size and wingspan catches your eye (he reportedly has a 7’3″ wingspan and is currently over 6’10″ in height, though he was 6’9″ in June when the Milwaukee Bucks drafted him and is expected to reach 7-feet by the time he’s done growing). Finally,...

Mitch Kupchak discusses 2014 NBA Draft; says top 10 prospects are the best he’s seen “in a long time”

In any ordinary season for the Los Angeles Lakers, Mitch Kupchak talking about the top ten NBA Draft prospects in early January would be unheard of. However, this isn’t an ordinary season. The Lakers are currently sat at 14-23 which would likely land them the ninth pick in June’s draft if the lottery was held today, or maybe even a top three selection if the ping pong balls...

The Curious Case of Pau Gasol

Image: ara.cat I consider myself a veteran, knowledgeable NBA fan. However, in the recent history of basketball I cannot recite a single situation that compares to what Mr. Gasol has been dealing with since the 2011 off-season. As you all know, Pau Gasol was once traded away from the Lakers in that notorious nixed Chris Paul deal which would’ve brought the superstar guard to the...

The Los Angeles Lakers dreadful season continues

This looks to be a lost season for the Los Angeles Lakers. The idea that the Los Angeles Clippers are the main attraction now at Staples Center now (last year as well), has to be a punch to the gut for the Lakers franchise and their fan base. There is no buzz, no excitement, no reason to believe a quick turnaround is in the works for the Lakers. As much as it might be an unfortunate...

Pau Gasol to undergo MRI exam on left foot

Image: ara.cat More injury news for the Los Angeles Lakers? Pau Gasol is scheduled to undergo an MRI exam on his left foot today, according to the Lakers’s official Twitter account. He apparently injured his foot during Friday’s blowout loss to the Los Angeles Clippers: .@paugasol will undergo an MRI today after injuring his left foot against the Clippers on Friday night.—...

Pau Gasol diagnosed with moderate strain of big left toe, will be game-time decision versus Cleveland

Image: ara.cat It looks like the Lakers could have nine active players in Tuesday’s game versus the Cleveland Cavaliers after all. Pau Gasol injured his left foot during Friday night’s game versus the Los Angeles Clippers and had an MRI examination yesterday. Luckily, the scan showed no more than a moderate strain of the flexor tendon of the big toe of his left foot and Gasol...

Mitch Kupchak Says The Lakers Have Never Tanked and Never Will

The Los Angeles Lakers have completely bottomed out over the past couple of weeks. They’re (1-9) in their last 10 games and are (14-23) overall. There’s been speculation the Lakers are tanking in order to land a top pick in this loaded draft, which features Andrew Wiggins, Jabari Parker and etc. Lakers general manager is completely against tanking: There is no way to believe...

Pau Gasol is a game-time decision Tuesday

Pau Gasol will be a game time decision according to an MRI he had earlier on Monday, what the Lakers said is a “moderate strain of the flexor tendon of the big toe of his left foot.” Gasol didn’t practice on Monday and went to Dr. Phillip Kwong a foot specialist. Pau was injured in a 123-87 loss to the Los Angeles Clippers on Friday night. The Lakers have currently list...

Mitch Kupchak: Lakers May Wait Until 2015 For Big FA Signing

Does Lakers GM Mitch Kupchak possibly adore Kevin Love more than he Does Carmelo Anthony? In an interview with Lakers.com, Kupchak says that the Lakers are open to the possibility not signing anyone to a huge deal this summer and instead holding that cap space for 2015. Several years ago, we made a conscious decision to line contracts up for this coming year of free agency. If you...

Lakers' Pau Gasol is game-time decision with toe strain

A bad season for the Los Angeles Lakers may have hit rock bottom on Friday with a 123-87 blowout loss to the Los Angeles Clippers.  The loss was their fourth in a row to drop the Lakers to 14-23, 11 games out in the Pacific Division.  Center Pau Gasol, who had just ten points on 5-of-15 shooting, has a toe injury and is questionable for tonight's game against Cleveland.Dave...

General Manager Mitch Kupchak Hopes Nick Young Is 'Laker for a Long Time'

Los Angeles Lakers general manager Mitch Kupchak has been struck by the NBA's version of Cupid's arrow, and it's left him enamored with Nick Young. Swaggy P signed a two-year contract with Los Angeles over the summer—with a player option for 2014-15—worth just over $1.1 million this season. Less than halfway through 2013-14, he's left his mark on the Lakers organization...

“To tank or not to tank?” is the wrong question to ask

10 losses in their last 11 games leaves the Lakers at 14-23 before they face the Cleveland Cavaliers on Tuesday night. The Lakers are 7 games behind 8th seed Dallas and only 2.5 games ahead of last place Utah. Derailed by injuries, this season has been somewhat disappointing. While no one realistically thought this group was going to challenge for a title, the playoffs were still...

Pau Gasol Sustains Strain Of Flexor Tendon In Big Toe

Pau Gasol underwent examinations on Monday and was diagnosed with a moderate strain of the flexor tendon in the big toe of his left foot. Gasol will be a game-time decision for the Los Angeles Lakers' next game against the Cleveland Cavaliers on Tuesday.

Mitch Kupchak hoping Nick Young will “be a Laker for a long time”

Nick Young has been quite a surprise for most Laker fans – myself included. The 28-year-old guard somehow earned a reputation around the league as a poor man’s J.R. Smith. How wrong that assumption was. While Smith is having one of the worst seasons of his career and is constantly in the media for the wrong reasons, Young has emerged as a vital part of Mike D’Antoni’s system...

Lakers: Week 11

Photo: L.A. Times I’m not going to give the Lakers any grades this week. They got embarrassed twice this week, and I don’t want to sit here and give them an “F” for everything.  That would be too easy. So, I’m going to address a few things that have been discussed by Laker fans over the past few weeks: Pau Gasol, Tanking, and Kevin Love. Pau Gasol Trade rumors have been...
