The Boston Bombers touted themselves as Boston’s only women’s semi-pro basketball team, a real part of the community. But now, because of that community association, the team is voluntarily changing its name in the wake of the Boston Marathon tragedy.

The Bombers held yearly tryouts, maintained a summer league and put on clinics for local youths. The team is affiliated with the Women’s Blue Chip League. However, after last week’s events, the team decided to make the name switch, already scrubbing its social media presence.

“We changed it due to the events Monday,” a spokesperson told Gawker. “Our fans [were] not happy with the name.”

The team has not released its new moniker yet, but says it will sometime this week.

  • they have got to be kidding me. i cannot stand women's basketball but to change the name because of this lets the terrorist win another battle. every time we change anything it gives them another victory. we as a society are becoming pathetic.
  • bobbot, I could not agree more! We are letting them win again. An established semi-profession women's basketball team is letting these two guys (punks) cause the team to change their name. It is an awful tragedy what happened there, but we need to stand strong, not bow down to them! I guess now these two jerks (well, one who is left) will own the name "Boston Bombers" because we have no backbone in out society anymore. We are so afraid we might "offend" someone! It makes me sick
  • hey , how about Boston strong ?
  • Really??? I'm tired of all this PC crap. When I went to University of North Dakota in the '90's, they had to change their mascot from the Fighting Sioux to something stupid because the NCAA thought it MIGHT be perceived as racist. Everyone there thought it was actually a compliment to the Sioux, but they changed it anyway. It's frustrating when people get upset over something people might possibly maybe be offended by.
  • Before long all teams will have to be called "The Butterflies" or The Sunshine, or Unicorns..ect...it is sickening. You guys will always be the Fighting Sioux to me!
  • I about Freaked, when I saw the headline...because, roundball being a low priority for me, I'm not generally in the loop. And, then, the link hit me, and I thought about the "melting pot fever" our nation has gotten (depending, of course, on what ethnicity one actually *is*), and although it seems impossible, I thought, "OMG!! It's gotten That poisonous!! The Celtics are giving into PC bullcrap!!!!!!!"
...but, then, I read the article...and, yes, it poses a problem...but, by my politics, women's sports (beyond the Olympics) is Part of the Problem. So, they can call themselves whatever they like. They are Not the Celtics, and are not (I cross myself at this point) Playing for the Celtics. So, let's hear it for the Boston Gray Blobs, the end result of PC Amerika! Just stay away from Real sports.

Roy Hibbert: ‘I was wrong’ to call out Pacers teammates

Indiana Pacers center Roy Hibbert says it what was wrong for him to criticize his teammates in late March. “You know, I think that I should’ve kept my frustrations to myself or just in the locker room,” Hibbert said on “ESPN First Take.” “I will admit that it wasn’t the best thing to do. I’ll learn from that, and I was wrong. There are better ways to handle that...

Colts reportedly won't allow Hakeem Nicks to wear No. 88

(Credit: BSO) Although the number 88 isn’t officially retired by the Indianapolis Colts, it appears nobody else will wear it again for the team. This includes recently signed wide receiver Hakeem Nicks, who wore 88 with the New York Giants. 88 is a sacred number in Indy, as it belonged to the franchise’s all-time leading receiver Marvin Harrison, as well as Hall of Fame tight...

Pacquiao spends $20K taking 50-man entourage shopping

Manny Pacquiao is a nice and generous guy, but there is a reason most people feel at some point he will end up broke. The problem with 50-man entourages is when you retire they quickly shrink to 5-man entourages. But, Manny was in a giving mood after beating Tim Bradley officially for the first time (unofficially for second time). Manny Pacquiao didn’t waste any time spending his...
