Carmelo Anthony is in the midst of a season where his Knicks are making a statement, and he is averaging over 29 points per game. He’s having one of the best seasons of his career, and the team’s record reflects it.

Lately, however, 'Melo has had some games where he has gotten off to slow starts and hasn’t shot the ball terribly well. The reason is something you probably wouldn’t expect.

According to 'Melo, he has been fasting for the past 15 days, which could definitely explain a little lack of energy. Via NBC Sports:

He admitted to being on a 15-day fast and that it was hard for him to feel energized during games.

“I usually do it to get some clarity in my life and spiritual reasons,” Anthony said after going for 27 points and seven boards as the Knicks snapped a three-game losing streak with a 100-87 win over the New Orleans Hornets. “But I’m done now….

“It’s a long story, man,” he said of his fast. “I haven’t had a good meal in about two and a half weeks. No meats, no carbs, anything like that. So I don’t know how I was out there competing at a high level. It’s been some games this past week where your body just feels depleted out there and you’re trying to find a way to get some energy.

“But I surrender, I’m done. I’m going to get some food right now.

This makes a lot of sense; imagine how hard it must be to play any professional sport while also trying to fast? The lack of carbs and protein must have been a huge problem for him over the past 15 days.

I’m sure Knicks fans are ready for 'Melo to end this and start eating normally once again.

  • Fasts and similar, token, self-denials are archaic expressions of religious philosophies that are attention-getting, publicity-seeking techniques.

Play your game and keep your odd, beliefs out of the media. If you want to starve yourself, then document it to the sports journals if you think you have an edge that is scientifically significant. Results are rewarded. Fable will retire you.
  • i guarantee you he didn't go to the media...the team eats together usually before games and he wasn't eating and there are a lot more people involved with the team then just the players and a few coaches it's NY the story got out somehow and someone asked him about it. so he gave a brief explanation. give the guy a break.
  • I always love to hear the thoughts and opinions of those who obviously have no religious convictions tell others how to properly show theirs. It's called? ugh called...oh yeah hypocrisy!!! Please READ AGAIN what he said...there was no starvation involved. I don't understand folks, if you don't have a belief fine FINE. Just don't tell me how to exercise mine!!
  • I agree with you totally azj187.
  • He should have considered only fasting during the offseason. Doing that while you have to use up so much energy is idiotic.
  • Really? Sounds like a STUPID thing to do during the season. Carmelo is just making up an excuse for some lousy games. He has always been more mouth than game.
  • It only sounds stupid to you because you have no earthly idea as to what he's talking about. People fast all the time and they don't let their work get in the way of doing it. I would be interested to see if you could compete at any level eating 3 meals a day with training....lol.... Don't criticize that which you do not understand. People's religious practices are their own personal choice and just because you choose not to have one, don't judge him....
  • He should have a great big bowl of Honey Nut Cheerios and STFU. Idiot.
  • A relative played football and baseball; professionally. He fasted every Sunday his entire athletic career and beyond - explaining to me it was an exercise in physical cleansing and conditioning - along with spiritual disciple. He had long and excellent careers in both sports and in one, is in the Hall of Fame. In this case, perhaps one does not know what one does not know? I for one, would not assume I know more about Carmelo Anthony, his training regimen, nor a career as a professional basketball player, than he.
  • First, that story sounds like ********. Second, you're comparing apples and oranges. "Fasting" for one day and actually fasting for over two weeks are two completely different scenarios.

I do agree that it's his life and he's free to live it the way he wants ... especially if his fasting is truly a religous thing for him.
  • Yaaawwwnn Oh Melo said something
  • oh poor anthony fasting all that time.. I wonder if he is fasting looking at his Bank Account too ??? yeah right...act your age and play BALL.. PLease spare me this kind of BS...
  • He's always been a DIVA so he's probably watching his figure.
