Los Angeles Lakers guard Kobe Bryant believes the team will have to lean on the players who have helped raise the banners in the Staples Center to turn the season around.

"A lot of responsibility is going to fall on me and Pau [Gasol], but we need Metta [World Peace]," Bryant told Yahoo! Sports. "Metta has a big presence on this team. I really encourage him to take that role head on – and to be an enforcer with it. But Metta, he's done it before. We've won before together.

"It has to be the guys who have done it before."

Bryant said he and Metta play off each other's intensity like Magic Johnson did with Michael Cooper back in the 1980s.

"Metta's just as intense as I am, and he's got a lot of that psychopath attitude that I do," Bryant said.

"That's something Magic and me talked about, about how [Michael] Cooper and him did that a lot, how they played off each other."

Bryant is optimistic he and the rest of the Lakers (9-14) starters can turn the season around.

"We're communicating," Bryant said. "Me and Pau, Metta and Coach (Mike) D'Antoni. Steve (Nash) and Dwight (Howard). We're communicating. We're going to figure this out."

The Lakers should get some help when Nash returns possibly next week and Gasol comes back, who is eyeing a return Dec. 22.

"I'm feeling better," Gasol said. "We don't want to risk going back to the way it was before. We're taking it one step at a time so we won't have any setbacks and I won't have to be out any longer than I need to."

  • Sure am tired of hearing about the "run of the mill" Laker team and especially Kobe "the phoney" Bryant. Until the Fakers start playing some team defense they're going nowhere.
  • LOL!!! you called them Fakers. i see what you did there, instead of Lakers you changed the L to an F so it makes it seem like they are fake. that is just too precious. i hope your mommy knows how clever you are and she gives you a cookie.
  • It's that psychopath attitude that's what we need. Only for fun of course.
  • Why don't Kobe punk a$$ be the enforcer, answer--- because he's a punk a$$
  • I'M SO HAPPY ABOUT METTA WORLD PEACE. HE IS THE SECOND MOST CONSISTENT PLATER OF THE LA LAKERS. YOU'RE MA MANNN!!1

Lakers end skid vs. woeful Wizards

Straining to work out the kinks in an offense coach Mike D'Antoni compared to dancing with two left shoes, Kobe Bryant and the Los Angeles Lakers even struggled to put away the Washington Wizards. A night after joking about wanting to face the Washington Generals, the Harlem Globetrotters' longtime foils, Bryant scored 30 points, and reserve Jodie Meeks added 24, helping...

J.R. Smith Takes Shot At Kobe Bryant On Twitter

J.R. Smith responded to some Laker fans on Twitter Wednesday night.  During the spree, Smith bashed Kobe Bryant insinuating he takes too many shots. This, coming from one of the most ridiculed players at shot selection. Does having a better record 21 games into the season justify Smith talking trash about one of the greatest players of all time? You be the judge: Yea shots! RT ...

D'Antoni: 'We're still not a very good team'

It may not have been pretty, Jodie Meeks said following the Lakers 102-96 win against Washington, but at least it was a win. Kobe Bryant shook off the effects of back spasms to score 30 points, while Meeks came off the bench to score a crucial 24 points as the Lakers snapped a four-game losing streak. And its more than fair to say a win is a win especially after four straight losses...
