Bill Simmons was part of ESPN’s team covering the NBA Draft live inside the Barclays Center Thursday night and at one point he suggested that new Los Angeles Clippers coach Doc Rivers had quit on the Boston Celtics. Well, when ESPN interviewed Rivers later in the evening to discuss the trade that sent Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce and Jason Terry to the Brooklyn Nets, he also addressed Simmons’ claims.

It was pretty shocking that Rivers went there on national television. Hilarious, but shocking.

5 Comments:
  • Well, Doc has finally stated publicly what I've wanted to say. In essence, Bill, get a clue!
  • I'll say it... You're an idiot. This guy doesn't think he's going to get called on his comments. When he does he's like a deer in the headlites. And it's apparent he makes the other commentators uncomfortable. This isn't the 1st time. Can his butt.
  • The problem is these journalists need to be journalists, and stop being fans on the air. Simmons is a Celtic fan, and he made it personal with his comment about Rivers "quitting" on the Celtics. These are the same guys that sit on the air and talk about coaches that "should" be fired, etc. This is business, and just because it happened on your favorite team doesn't make it credible for him to say something like that on the air. Rivers did an outstanding job with the Celts, but everyone moves on at some point. When coaches don't pull off a rebuild quick enough, they get fired. The team "quits" on them. They came to a mutually agreed upon solution. I love Simmons' writing, but that same wit doesn't come across on tv. He tries too hard sometimes to be provocative.

Doc Rivers Says Bill Simmons ‘Did Everything He Could to Get Me Fired’

It’s obvious that Doc Rivers and Bill Simmons aren’t each other’s biggest fans. But, the beef could be personal between the two. In a radio interview Friday on WEEI, Rivers accused Simmons of doing “everything he could to get me fired,” and went on to say that Simmons even wrote letters to Celtics ownership and requested meetings to share his plans for firing the coach...

Doc Rivers’ son Jeremiah unloads on ESPN’s Bill Simmons after Simmons said Doc ‘quit on the Celtics’

ESPN’s Bill Simmons is a die hard Boston Celtics fan. He doesn’t hide it or distant himself from that fact. It’s what his career is based on. Naturally, he had a lot to say about the recent move west by former Celtics head coach D0c Rivers to take over the Clippers. Simmons went on an emotional rant about Rivers saying he quit on the Celtics. During Thursday night’s ESPN’s...

Doc Rivers’ son calls out Bill Simmons on Twitter, Simmons responds

After Doc Rivers and Bill Simmons went at each other during the NBA Draft and Rivers’ son Jeremiah was not happy about what Simmons said.  He took to Twitter and ripped Bill Simmons for his comments.  Simmons isn’t the type of person to just lie down and take this shredding, so he responded on Twitter with his own statement. When I get home I'm signing up my 5 and a half...

Doc Rivers on Bill Simmons: “I’d Like to Call him an Idiot but I’m too Classy” (Video)

Straight like that. ESPN NBA analyst Bill Simmons, who is an unabashed Boston Celtics fan, has been slandering the good name of one Doc Rivers saying that he he “quit” on the team, ever since he made it clear that he didn’t want to stick around for the rebuilding years. Last night during ESPN’s NBA Draft coverage, Rivers was asked about the Celtics blockbuster trade with...

Doc Rivers and Bill Simmons still going at it a day later

Doc on @WEEI about @BillSimmons: "He did everything he could to get me fired. Wrote letters, wanted to sit down w/ owners to talk about it." — Ben Rohrbach (@brohrbach) June 28, 2013 The quote I just retweeted is an outright, 100 percent lie. I'd be careful, Glenn. Seriously. Stop talking. You are making sh*t up. — Bill Simmons (@BillSimmons) June 28, 2013 Right...

Doc Rivers on Bill Simmons: “I would Call him an Idiot, but I’m too Classy” (Video)

Quietly? Simmons had a point. Listen, I respect Doc Rivers and Bill Simmons is a well-known Boston Celtics fan so he may not necessarily be the most objective person to speak on the situation. But I think it’s pretty clear that Rivers didn’t want to return to Boston next season or he would be there. [...]

Doc Rivers Knew About Paul Pierce, Kevin Garnett Trade Weeks Before Leaving Celtics

Doc Rivers‘ decision to leave the Boston Celtics is a little easier to understand now. While addressing reporters during Thursday’s NBA draft, the new head coach of the Los Angeles Clippers was asked to react to the news that Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett, two star players he had grown close to during his time as coach of the Celtics, had been traded to the Brooklyn Nets. While...

Report: Doc Rivers Bringing Most of His Celtics Assistants to Join Clippers’ Coaching Staff

When Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce going to the Clippers was still a possibility, there were jokes about the Clippers becoming the West Coast Celtics. It turns out they still will be, just not on the court. The Clippers’ bench will look at lot like the Celtics’ bench of the last few years, as Doc Rivers plans to bring most of his assistant coaches with him to Los Angeles. Kevin...

Window Closing

Not sure what to call this digital art/commentary but it certainly brings us no delight this afternoon as reality of an ending era is made palpable by the recent departure of Doc Rivers and current talk of moving KG and Pierce to Brooklyn. But recall when this current crop of Celtics were brought together back in 2007-08 and how the proverbial window was conservatively estimated...

The moment the Celtics needed Doc most, he decided it was time to go

One day after Danny Ainge told his side of the story, Doc Rivers spoke to the media in Los Angeles, and then held a conference call with the Boston media. Doc was his normal self at the press conference, showing off his sense of humor and his graciousness when Clippers management said he was the best coach in basketball, "Let's stop with that 'best coach in basketball...

The other shoe dropped, or at least started to dangle, on Thursday night as the “Boston Globe” has reported that the Celtics have...

Yankees bench Derek Jeter

Things have hit rock bottom in the Bronx.  In what should be a celebratory month of Derek Jeter‘s career (and potential final postseason appearance), the New York Yankees are just about out of options to make the playoffs.  One last option was exercised today.  Bench Derek Jeter.  Not demote him out of the number two spot.  Not give him a day of rest.  Benched.  The American...

The New York Jets could have made a game-tying touchdown in the match against the Packers, however, a timeout error of course made the situation complicated for the Jets, as usual. Report: Gruden thinks Cousins is a better fit for offense than RG3

Since he was hired as head coach of the Washington Redskins, Jay Gruden has remained committed to Robert Griffin III — at least publicly. Oakland Raiders DB Charles Woodson was not in a good mood after the Raiders’ 30-14 loss to the Houston Texans on Sunday.
