NBA Hall of Famer Dolph Schayes dies at age 87

NBA Hall of Fame player Dolph Schayes died at the age of 87 Thursday morning, according to his son, Danny.

Schayes died six months after being diagnosed with cancer.

Schayes, a six-foot-eight forward from the Bronx, New York, played for the Syracuse Nationals — who became the Philadelphia 76ers in 1963 — from 1949 to 1964. He averaged 18.5 points and 12.1 rebounds over a career in which he appeared in 12 All-Star games. Schayes also led the Nationals to their one and only NBA title in 1955.

After his playing career, Schayes would go on to coach the Philadelphia 76ers and Buffalo Braves. He was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1972.

Schayes' son, Danny, also played 18 seasons in the NBA for seven different teams.
