FootBasket:
Ever since the Seattle Supersonics went bankrupt and moved to Oklahoma City to become the Thunder, the call to bring the franchise back has been in high demand. And right now, the demand is higher than ever.
With David Stern announcing that he will step down as the NBA’s commissioner in February 2014, the one big think he is looking to do is to bring a franchise back to the city, according to Yahoo! Sports Adrian Wojnarowski.
Stern has less than two years to make such a move, but it is doable. Stern is a supporter of the group of Steve Ballmer, the CEO of Microsoft, who has been pushing the Maloof brothers to sell the Sacramento Kings franchise. The Kings have been through a lot, as many are wondering if they will actually stay in Sactown or not. Other rumors have said that they could move to Las Vegas as well.
However, with the booming fanbase the city of Seattle used to have, it would be right to bring the Supersonics name they have always wanted. But it all depends on if they can get the Maloofs to do so, as Wojnarowski says they have been increasing the pressure more and more for them to sell the franchise.
“Stern has enough time to get a team back to Seattle, but he’ll let Silver deal with the crowd [booing] on opening night,” said a source.
Fans have never forgiven Stern for what happened to the Sonics, and he wants to make up for it as he wants to bring back a franchise to the city as much as the fans do.
The fanbase for the Kings have been fading ever since, and it doesn’t help with three other California teams there who are more popular. I don’t think we will ever see the Kings go back to their high times of the early 2000′s. As for Seattle, their fans will never forget the Sonics and neither will Stern, which is why he will do everything in his right mind to bring the team back.
