Antawn Jamison has heard the trade rumors. He knows he has an expiring contract -- considered a valuable commodity in this sometimes warped world of NBA deals. He also understands the Cavs are approaching this season with one eye on the future. So its no surprise to 35-year old Cavaliers forward that his name keeps popping up. If I dont hear my name around this time, thats when Ive got something to worry about, because thats when something might actually happen, he said from the Cavs practice facility Monday. Jamisons name has been mentioned in trade speculation involving every team from New Orleans to Charlotte to Atlanta. He not only owns a contract that will be wiped off a teams payroll this summer, but hes also the Cavs leading scorer at 18.6 points per game. Basically, if youre an opposing club looking for help, and cap relief, hes your guy. And the Cavs are indeed fielding calls about Jamison. But they have something to consider. To the surprise of many, theyre in the Eastern Conference playoff chase -- and were just a game behind New York for the final playoff seed heading into Monday nights games. Keeping Jamison would only increase the Cavs chances. Trading him would likely result in another trip to the draft lottery. So whats better: Getting another high draft pick, or getting into the playoffs? Well, Im a little biased, Jamison admitted, laughing. When I was coming up as part of a young team (with Golden State), it was good to get some great young pieces. That was a decade ago, when the Warriors were considered a young and up-and-coming team with the likes of Jamison, Gilbert Arenas, Troy Murphy, Jason Richardson and Mike Dunleavy. Great young talent, Jamison said. But to get that playoff experience, knowing what it takes to be in the (playoff) race, having to find a way to get it done and the actual experience of making the playoffs, to me, is an actual step above the other scenario. Youre actually doing something that you set out to do before the season started. With youngsters such as rookie point guard Kyrie Irving, rookie power forward Tristan Thompson and second-year small forward Alonzo Gee playing key roles, the Cavs are considered a rebuilding team with an optimistic future. Still, Jamison said he felt he still plays an important role. And its for that reason that he feels he wont be traded before the March 15 deadline at 3 p.m. Its part of the game, as far as trade rumors and speculation, he said. People call me just as much at this time as anytime of the year. They say, I heard you might go to this place or that place. But me and (Cavs general manager Chris) Grant have a good relationship. He told me that if something comes up, Ill be the first to let you know. As a player, thats very satisfying when you have someone who is up front with you and will let you know if something is going to happen. So far, we havent had that talk. So I dont expect to go anywhere. Lakers seek PG Its pretty clear the Lakers feel they need a new point guard if they are to return to true championship contention. Last week, they attempted to pry Rajon Rondo from Boston, according to a report in the Los Angeles Times. However, the Celtics apparently were asking for forward Pau Gasol in return. No deal, said the Lakers. Unless they give up Gasol, they're not going to get a top-level point guard, a source familiar with the situation told the Times. The Lakers also seem unwilling to part with one of their two first-round draft picks in a deal -- although multiple sources feel that could change before Thursdays deadline. Theyre sticking to their belief that they can get help without giving up anything, for now, said a Western Conference GM. But reality will set in soon enough. When it does, well be more willing to take their calls. The Lakers have also been linked to Cavs point guard Ramon Sessions. But again, it is said they wouldnt part with a first-round pick to make it happen. If thats the case, I dont understand the thinking there, said the GM. Are they going to get a player who can help them as much as (Sessions) could where they are drafting? Maybe. But even then, theyd have to wait until next season. Thats really putting a lot of faith in the draft process. More recent reports have the Lakers sending Steve Blake to Portland for Raymond Felton. Quick Hits Sacramento is one under-the-radar team that could pull off a last-minute deal. On top of making forward J.J. Hickson available, the Kings are said to be open to moving everyone but DeMarcus Cousins and Marcus Thornton. So, yes, that means Tyreke Evans could be available. Minnesota is still trying to move small forward Michael Beasley, but is having a hard time finding a fair deal, said one source familiar with the situation. Boston is one team that remains particularly interested. John Wall appears to be the lone untouchable on Washingtons roster. The Wizards have been placing calls to let it be known that JaVale McGee, Andray Blatche and Nick Young are available, sources say. Another team no one is saying much about: Detroit. The Pistons are closing in on a playoff spot behind the play of youngsters Greg Monroe and Brandon Knight, and wouldnt mind making a move to further the push. (Pistons president of basketball operations) Joe Dumars has probably called every team twice, an Eastern Conference GM said, laughing. But ask about Monroe or Knight, and hell hang up on you. Other top names worth keeping a close eye on as the deadline nears: Atlanta forward Josh Smith, Golden State guard Monta Ellis, Toronto guard Jose Calderon, and of course, Orlando center Dwight Howard. But one GM said, Of the names on that list, Id say Calderon is the only possibility (to get traded by Thursday). Follow Sam Amico on Twitter @SamAmicoFSO
