For the most part, when one types in a professional team name followed by a domain label (.com, .net, etc.), they are usually directed to the actual team site or redirected to the league’s site for the team. The Brooklyn Nets currently have a site through the NBA’s website. When a fan would like to view an official webpage by typing in “nets.com”, they are redirected somewhere else, which is quite clever. When doing just that, a user is redirected and taken to a Jay-Z fan site.
According to Deadspin, whoever is maintaining the website is trying to attract the attention of Nets owner Mikhail Prokhorov and Nets minority owner and hip-hop mogul Jay-Z. Of course, this is a great tactic by the ones who actually own the “nets.com” domain. Once the Nets ownership and management goes in the direction of purchasing the domain name, the people behind the website now will see a nice little check coming their way.
