With Metta World Peace being waived during the off-season, the Los Angeles Lakers have a vacancy at the starting small forward position. According to Nick Young, head coach Mike D’Antoni has indicated that Wesley Johnson and himself will compete for a starting position during training camp. Here’s what Swaggy P told Mark Medina at an NBA 2K14 launch event earlier this week: The former USC and Cleveland High of Reseda standout revealed D’Antoni’s intentions that both he and Wesley Johnson are spending part of training camp competing for the starting spot at small forward. “I think it’s going to be a little bit of both,” Young said. “Wesley is young and athletic and could fit in that Shawn Marion type game. That’s what they like about him.” In theory, it would appear that Johnson would be better off as a starter; he’d bring his defense to the line-up and would have his offense created for him by the likes of Steve Nash, Kobe Bryant and Pau Gasol. This would also mean that Young would be able to bring a spark off the bench seeing as Nick is excellent at creating his own offense. Then again, these things don’t always work out like you’d expect them to – a guy like Elias Harris or Shawne Williams could have a great training camp and pre-season and find himself getting a large amount of minutes when opening night rolls around. The best thing about this season is that the Lakers have a lot of options and everyone will be playing hard in order to earn minutes. As long as the best performers are getting the most minutes every night, I don’t mind what the eventual starting line-up looks like. .bottom-of-post-responsive { width: 300px; height: 250px; } @media(min-width: 500px) { .bottom-of-post-responsive { width: 300px; height: 250px; } } @media(min-width: 800px) { .bottom-of-post-responsive { width: 336px; height: 280px; } }
