As this day goes by more and more news about former Tar Heels now in the National Basketball Association comes out. This time it’s about forward Marvin Williams (6’9″/245 lbs), who was the first ever Top 5 pick to be chosen in the NBA Draft without ever starting a game while in college. And while that is somewhat a skewed statistic, since he only played one season in Chapel Hill, he also left after winning a national title. He went second to Atlanta in the 2005 draft, and now will be moving west, to join the Utah Jazz, or so says Marc Stein of ESPN. And while the seven year pro came into the NBA with the magical word “potential” all over him he has never been as good as the billing for a second overall pick should be.

Just going online and on SportsCenter: Hawks have agreed in principle to deal Marvin Williams to Utah for Devin Harris to shed even more $

— Marc Stein (@ESPNSteinLine) July 2, 2012

The former Carolina small forward and national champion under head coach Roy Williams would have cost the Hawks $ 7.5 million this season. When making that type of money scoring just above 10 points per game while grabbing 5.2 per contest might not just have been good enough for the franchise. However, for many, including Stein this seems a move to clear salary cap as they have also shipped out Joe Johnson to the New Jersey Brooklyn Nets, which means that the team coached by Larry Drew Sr., the father of the former UNC point guard who decided to leave Chapel Hill, is probably planning on doing more shaking and baking in this free agency market. Some have even ventured to say that the Atlanta franchise might be making all this room to try and lure Dwight Howard back to his home town.

As far as Marvin Williams is concerned he is going to go to a team in the Utah Jazz that can use his services a lot more than they could use Devin Harris’, the player they traded with the Hawks for the small forward. Could the change of scenery help the former Heel? Could a new team spark a new life into a player so many thought could be a very good pro? Only time will tell, but one thing is for sure, how things were going in Atlanta heading to a new franchise might just be the jolt that Williams needed in his career. And as usual, just like all the other present and former Heels, let me wish all the best to Marvin as he begins another chapter in his professional career.

And for you that might have never seen Marvin Williams play in the Dean Dome here is a nice dunk from him against Florida State…
