What happens now is the rest of the story, right? Evan Fournier gets a regular gig, exhales, and then flourishes in a permanent role on the perimeter in the Nuggets' rotation. Well, yes. That's exactly what's happening for the Nuggets' second-year wing, who is playing the best, most confident basketball of his young NBA career. "He's taken advantage of his opportunity," Nuggets coach Brian Shaw said. "He's being aggressive offensively. He's taking what the defense gives him, and he's getting more confident as he gets more time out there on the floor." Since Shaw shortened his rotation and included the 21-year-old Fournier in the mix six games ago, the native of France is averaging 13.8 points on 53.4 percent shooting, and 4.3 rebounds. In the past three games, Fournier has averaged 17.7 points and 4.0 rebounds, shooting 58.8 percent from 3-point range. Fournier has carved out a reputation of being one of the Nuggets' best 3-point shooters. And for a team always looking to spread the court and find open 3s, Fournier's stepped-up play has filled a need. The Nuggets are a better-shooting basketball team of late, and aside from percentage hikes out of Randy Foye and Nate Robinson, they owe much of that to Fournier. "I see every game his confidence going up," teammate J.J. Hickson said. "As a teammate and as a coaching staff, you've got to love that, to see a guy's confidence going up. Hopefully he can sustain it because we're going to need him moving forward." The 6-foot-7 Fournier has flashed this type of productivity before. Last season, when injuries to perimeter players thinned the Nuggets' roster, Fournier was called upon to fill the void. He delivered. Fournier played so well that he got significant minutes in the playoff series against Golden State even after injured players returned.
