Panel Studying Concussions Recommends Ban on all Fighting in Hockey

An expert panel studying the effects of concussions in hockey has recommended that fighting be eliminated from the sport at all levels. The panel’s recommendations comes from the London Hockey Concussion Summit, which ran from Jan. 17-18. Former NHL players Eric Lindros, Jeff Beukeboom, Alyn McCauley, and Marcus Moore were part of the summit giving their insight into their experiences with concussions. According to the Canadian Press, the panel also recommended elimination of high hits/head hits. "Fighting is one of the known causes of concussion, and may result in the related long-term complications," the panel's summary statement says. "Fighting can cause needless death." "Those are significant ones," Summit chair Dr. Paul Echlin said. "The reduction of hits from behind has had a major effect on the incidence of broken necks in hockey and similarly, the reduction of high/head hits should reduce the incidence of concussions."  OTHER N...
