The optimism surrounding Los Angeles Lakers veterans Steve Nash and Pau Gasol has gone in split directions since training camp opened last month. Gasol came in unsure if he would be able to participate because of offseason procedures on both of his knees, but ended up leading the team in scoring (13.7 points) while chipping in 6.3 rebounds and 3.4 assists per game in the preseason. Nash came in saying how improved his body was after missing 32 games last season because of a broken leg and hip and groin injuries that stemmed from it, but he was extremely limited during the exhibition schedule, averaging just 4.0 points and 3.6 assists in 18.4 minutes. "I feel better than what I expected," Gasol said after practice Sunday ahead of the Lakers' regular-season opener Tuesday against the Los Angeles Clippers. "I'm really happy with how I feel right now. Now it's just a matter of we have a tough start, very demanding, a lot of games in a short period of time t...

Pau Gasol admits that he was worried about the Lakers on opening night last season

Last year, the Los Angeles Lakers went into opening night with an 0-8 pre-season record. While the Lakers’ players told the media and fans that they weren’t worried about the slow start and claimed they would finally figure it out, Pau Gasol told Dave McMenamin of ESPN Los Angeles that he was secretly concerned after the team’s slow start: “It’s very rare for a team to...

D'Antoni: Politics Made Offense Prefer Dwight Over Gasol Last Season

Mike D'Antoni did not enjoy marginalizing Pau Gasol in an attempt to placate Dwight Howard last season with the Los Angeles Lakers. "It was very uncomfortable," D'Antoni said. "I knew I was messing on (Gasol) last year. That's not fair to him. But that was the situation we were in. How do we make the best of it? I was just trying to make the best of it...

The Los Angeles Lakers don’t need Steve Nash

When I first heard that the Los Angeles Lakers acquired Steve Nash on July 11, 2012, I was borderline irate. I thought it was one of the biggest mistakes that General Manager Mitch Kupchak and the Lakers’ organization had made. I was never a fan of Steve Nash and having him be a part of the team I supported wasn’t exactly music to my ears. (Photo Credit: Reed Saxon/AP) However...

Pau Gasol, Mike D'Antoni clear up 'uncomfortable' air

The air has long since been cleared between Pau Gasol and Mike D'Antoni, and that's saying something considering they work in a city where smog is as much a part of the landscape as the Los Angeles Lakers flags that still fly from passing cars. But even without Kobe Bryant here at the outset, the two most important men in the Lakers' new mission swear the regular season...

Steve Nash may miss Wednesday’s back-to-back game at Golden State

Before training camp started, Mike D’Antoni hinted that Steve Nash may sit back-to-back games this season in order to keep his body rested. It now appears that this strategy may be brought into effect as early as Wednesday. The Lakers open their season on Tuesday when they face the Los Angeles Clippers and then will travel to the Bay Area for a game the following night against...

Lakers say Steve Nash could sit out games this season to stay healthy

The Los Angeles Lakers have let it be known that they will monitor the minutes Steve Nash plays during the 2013-14 season. In fact, they have all but said the 39-year-old could sit out games this season to keep him healthy. The Lakers have 19 back-to-back sets this season and head coach Mike D’Antoni says he will treat each one individually and determine how much Nash can play...

VIDEO: Lakers vs. Jazz – extended highlights (10/25/13)

GAME RECAPS Coach Mike D’Antoni gave ten guys more than 19 minutes of floor time tonight in what could be a template for success in the coming season. D’Antoni played two distinct line-ups tonight, which had very little overlap with one another. The starters were Pau Gasol, Shawne Williams, Nick Young, Steve Blake and Steve Nash. Gasol and Blake were outstanding, with Gasol recording...

Steve Nash, Shawne Williams to start Tuesday versus Clippers

The Los Angeles Lakers finally get their 2013-14 season underway on Tuesday night when they take on the Clippers at home. Sadly, they’ll be without Kobe Bryant, but apart from that everyone else is available to play. According to tweets from Lakers reporter Mike Trudell and ESPN Los Angeles’ Dave McMenamin, Steve Nash (neck, ankle) is good to go and Shawne Williams will be the...

LA Lakers’ Steve Nash a Concern for Season

At the age of 39, Los Angeles Lakers’ point guard Steve Nash is the oldest player in the NBA and has been battling injuries the last couple of years. Nash is doing what he feels is necessary to be on the court the most during the regular season this year. At the same time, the Lakers have the luxury of having two other talented point guards on the roster in Steve Blake and Jordan...

Lakers’ Steve Nash could rest on second day of back-to-back games
