MINNEAPOLIS (AP) -- Nikola Pekovic had 25 points and a career-high 18 rebounds, Andrei Kirilenko added 21 points and the Minnesota Timberwolves beat the Atlanta Hawks 108-103 on Tuesday night.
Derrick Williams scored 17 points and Alexey Shved had 15 for the Timberwolves, who were missing coach Rick Adelman due to personal reasons. Terry Porter filled in and led the Wolves to their first victory over Atlanta since 2006, snapping an 11-game skid.
Josh Smith had 21 points and 13 rebounds and Al Horford had 19 points and 11 boards for the Hawks, who have lost three straight and four of their last five. They lost for the first time this year when Smith and Horford each get a double-double.
Minnesota point guard Ricky Rubio had eight assists and four points in 18 minutes in his first game back after missing the previous four with back spasms.
Lou Williams finished with 21 points and eight assists for the Hawks, who had a chance to tie the game in the closing seconds. But Dante Cunningham stole the inbounds pass and Luke Ridnour knocked down two free throws to seal the win.
The Timberwolves led by 14 to start the fourth quarter, with the Hawks showing few signs of getting back into the game. But Lou Williams scored seven quick points and Horford backed Derrick Williams down for a short jumper to trim the deficit to four with six minutes to play.
Kirilenko hit two 3s for a 100-89 lead with 4:15 remaining, but Kyle Korver hit two 3s and Lou Williams scored on a driving layup during a 12-2 surge that brought Atlanta within one. Korver finished with 15 points.
Pekovic was given a basket on a goaltending violation by Smith and Cunningham hit a 21-foot jumper with 15.9 seconds left to hold off the Hawks.
The Wolves have been the worst 3-point shooting team in the league virtually all season, but they hit 8 of 15 against the Hawks to get a big win before a four-game road trip.
While the Heat and Knicks grabbed all the headlines in the first two months of the season, the Hawks quietly put together a solid start that kept them right on their heels. They won 19 of their first 28 games, beating the likes of Oklahoma City, Indiana (twice), the Clippers and Memphis along the way to legitimize their standing as a contender in the East. But they lost at Detroit and home against Boston in a back-to-back last weekend, scoring just nine points in the third quarter against the Celtics.
Coach Larry Drew said he thought his team panicked for the first time all season, then watched it struggle to keep up with Minnesota's crisp ball movement and Derrick Williams' shot-making in the first half. The second-year forward has never been in Adelman's good graces, and his playing time has been sporadic, with the veteran coach favoring the more consistent Cunningham.
With Kevin Love out with a broken hand, Williams scored 18 points in the fourth quarter of a loss to Portland on Saturday night, then hit three of four 3-pointers in the first half to help the Wolves take a 17-point lead.
NOTES: Porter interviewed for an assistant position on Drew's staff when he was hired in Atlanta. How'd that go? "I didn't get it," Porter said with a chuckle. ... The Timberwolves played host to 16-year-old Cody Metz as part of the Make-A-Wish program. Metz is a devoted fan who has suffered from numerous complications following surgery on a brain tumor five years ago. Metz watched the game from a suite and planned to accompany the team on a road trip to Oklahoma City. "This definitely gives me something to look forward to," Metz said. "I'm really excited."

MINNEAPOLIS When the Timberwolves drafted Derrick Williams second overall, the highest-ever pick in franchise history, in June 2011, he was, for a brief moment, the future of the team. All such high draft picks are, by virtue of the number assigned to them and the value it implies, if for no better reason.
But with the Timberwolves, that designation didn't last long. Problem...
Kevin Love will miss eight to 10 weeks after he undergoes surgery on the third and fourth metacarpals on his broken right hand. According to multiple reports, the surgery will take place next week.
Love flew to New York Wednesday to consult with Dr. Andy Weiland, a hand specialist at the Hospital for Special Surgery who treated him for his past two hand injuries. At the appointment...
MINNEAPOLIS Ricky Rubio answered the question like there'd never been a doubt.
Yes, he said. Yes, he'll be playing in Oklahoma City Wednesday night, tomorrow night, really, when he said it. And tomorrow night implies back-to-back, which is just what the Timberwolves are facing and just what Rubio has heretofore been banned from.
"My first back-to-back," he said...
MINNEAPOLIS Cody Metz looks like any other 16-year-old Timberwolves fan. Sitting courtside while the team warmed up Tuesday for its game against the Hawks at the Target Center, Metz had the requisite jersey and awestruck smile. He was this close to Ricky Rubio, to Derrick Williams. He could have been hit by an errant basketball, for that matter.
Of course he was a little overwhelmed...
MINNEAPOLIS Barring some other setback, Ricky Rubio will return to the Timberwolves' lineup on Tuesday against Atlanta. The point guard has missed the past four games with back spasms, but he practiced Monday and said he's ready to go. Nikola Pekovic, who sat for most of the second half of Saturday's game with a left hip strain he sustained Thursday, did not practice...
MINNEAPOLIS Dante Cunningham is not among the league leaders in steals. Not steals per minute, either. Steals per clutch moment, though if that were a stat, you have to know the forward would be up there.
With 15 seconds remaining in the Timberwolves' 108-103 win over Atlanta on Tuesday, Cunningham lurched the ball away from Josh Smith, ensuring a foul, two free throws, and...
The Minnesota Timberwolves hoped that they could avoid surgery for forward Kevin Love. According to ESPN.com, the team announced that Love is expected to be out for eight to 10 weeks after breaking his right hand for the second time this season.Love missed the first three weeks of the regular season after breaking his right hand in the preseason. He returned faster than most expected...
MINNEAPOLIS This is bad. Epically bad, in fact. Ugly bad. Head-shakingly bad. Tied for 21th-worst all-time bad.
If you haven't guessed it yet, I'm referring to the Timberwolves' 3-point shooting this season. As a team, they're shooting a collective 30.1 percent from long range, which is a resounding worst in the NBA and, among teams all-time that have attempted more...
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) The Minnesota Timberwolves have been saying all season the playoffs are the goal this year. Now they're banking on it.
The Wolves are promising anyone who renews their season ticket or purchases a new one for next season a 10 percent discount if the team does not make the playoffs this year. The Wolves are currently in ninth place in the Western Conference...
Losing Kevin Love to injury leaves a huge hole in the Minnesota Timberwolves' lineup, but coach Rick Adelman can't afford for his team to wait for the All-Star forward to return.
Now, it's uncertain when Timberwolves center Nikola Pekovic will be back.
Point guard Ricky Rubio, though, is expected to return from his injury on Tuesday night when the host Timberwolves...
Plus he adds a behind the back dime to boot
T-Mac’s Chinese saga has nearly reached a level of weirdness paralleled only by that of JR Smith. McGrady’s Qingdao Eagles are now 19 games into their season, yet they’ve won just twice. The constant losing has frustrated Qingdao players and fans alike and has led to such drama as debris being hurled onto the floor, McGrady elbowing a player who taunted him, and now, a...
MINNEAPOLIS -- The Minnesota Timberwolves keep losing players, and Tuesday night, they played without their coach as well. Still they pushed their record back above .500 this late in the season for the first time since 2007, earning a 108-103 victory over the Atlanta Hawks at Target Center. With coach Rick Adelman absent due to what the team called a personal matter, top assistant...
