Courtesy WEEI’s Mike Petraglia: Before Monday’s practice at the teams training facility, Boston Celtics captain Paul Pierce wins a wager with head coach Doc Rivers and makes the assistant coaches run wind sprints. Taking part in the running for assistant coaches Tyronn Lue, Armond Hill and Kevin Eastman. Doc Rivers was not forced to take part in the drill. Wind springs? Light jogging maybe, but certainly not wind sprints. We don’t know the specifics of the bet, but it could be connected to March Madness. We’ll keep you posted.

Memphis 110, Boston 106: Paul Pierce and company fall to Grizzlies despite late-game resurgence

After watching college a lot of college basketball for the last three days this game was filled with well-executed offense, decisive shot takers and makers, and actual dribble penetration. Not to go all NBA elitist on you all, as even a Saturday night bout between two playoff teams did not render half of the energy as the round of 32 yielded in the tournament. But enough of basketball...

Doc Rivers Rooting Hard for Florida Gulf Coast, Austin Rivers’ Childhood Friend Brett Comer

Doc Rivers no longer has a horse in the race, now that his son Austin Rivers is plying his trade in the NBA. The Celtics coach and college basketball fan does have a rooting interest in the NCAA Tournament, though. Rivers admitted that he is enjoying Florida Gulf Coast’s run to the Sweet 16, and that he has a personal connection with the Eagles. FGCU’s primary alley-oop thrower...

Paul Pierce, Celtics Struggle to Maintain Effort, Focus Without Kevin Garnett as Injuries Mount

BOSTON — Avery Bradley did not try to pinpoint any one area in which things went wrong for the Celtics on Tuesday. Neither a massive disparity in second-chance points nor the Celtics’ carelessness with the basketball was the first reason provided by the third-year guard when he was asked the open-ended question of how a competitive game unraveled so quickly. “We weren’t playing...

Celtics Road Woes Continue with 110-106 Loss to the Grizzlies

Just a few random thoughts for tonight's post game wrap up.  First, KG's injury is troubling.  He didn't seem to injure the foot in the game but they said he was walking gingerly afterwards.   It is being described as a foot injury rather than an ankle injury. And the fact that they are going to take an MRI makes it even more worrisome.    I remember back in that...

Recap: Celtics’ road woes continue

It looked like maybe the Celtics would somewhat salvage this road trip tonight when they started the game on a 12-2 run. Unfortunately, it was not to be. An undermanned and visibly frustrated C’s team was no match for the Grizzlies. Memphis dominated this game on all levels tonight: rebounding, scoring in the paint, second-chance points, you get the picture. Boston goes 0-3 on...

Underrated Stat of the Night - Grizzlies 3/23

Tonight's 110-106 loss to the Grizzlies was filled with ups and downs. The Celtics got off to nice start, but slipped in the second and third quarters. Their fourth quarter contained a rally that didn't start until about the 6:00 mark. Had it started earlier, they definitely would've won. But it didn't. What's done is done. Tonight's USOTN easily goes to...

A reason for Celtics fans to root for Florida Gulf Coast

After knocking off #2 seed Georgetown 78-68 on Friday, the Eagles of Florida Gulf Coast University just beat seventh seeded San Diego State (81-71) to become the first #15 seed in the history of the NCAA Tournament to reach the Sweet Sixteen.  FGCU has only been in existence for 16 years, and moved up to Division 1 just two seasons ago.  When they take on the Florida Gators in...

‘Scary’ Jordan Crawford Not Worth Trying to Change as Doc Rivers Accepts Good, Bad With Shoot-First Guard

BOSTON — In Doc Rivers‘ mind, there is something worse than Jordan Crawford taking one of his patented off-balance, contested 3-point shots with plenty of time left on the shot clock. And that is planting a seed of doubt in the fearless shooter’s mind that, maybe, he is being too carefree for his own good. Crawford has long been criticized for his questionable shot selection...

Enemy Chatter: The Knicks are terrified of the Celtics

We often wonder what opposing teams, their beat reporters and bloggers are saying about the Celtics. Here’s a look at some enemy chatter from New York. There are Knicks fans by the thousands, maybe by the millions, who looked at the standings yesterday morning and saw the following facts: the Knicks resting in second place by percentage points in the Eastern Conference; the Celtics...

Morning Poll: Do you trust the Celtics when it comes to injuries?

Here's Doc Rivers on Kevin Garnett's injury: "He hurt his foot in the Dallas game. Unless something crazy happens in the MRI -- that I can tell you, at first look, they didn’t see that -- unless something happens, at the end of the day, he may miss some games, but we’re going to err on right side [of caution]. Whatever they decide, if they give me option of, '...

Kevin Garnett Has Ankle Inflammation, May Miss Two Weeks

An MRI on Kevin Garnett’s left foot showed swelling in his ankle, and he is officially listed as doubtful for Tuesday’s game against the Knicks. According to Coach Doc Rivers, K.G. hurt his foot during Friday’s loss at Dallas, and it’s possible that the Celtics’ defensive leader will miss at least the next four or five games. Rivers told the Boston Globe, “Whatever [management...
