Pistons President of Basketball Operations Joe Dumars did what Pistons President of Basketball Operations Joe Dumars does.  He got out from underneath an awful move (Ben Gordon’s five-year, $55 million contract he signed him to in 2009) and made something out of it.  This time, it cost him a future first round pick.  Dumars talked the Bobcats into accepting Ben Gordon and a future first round pick for swingman Corey Maggette according to Yahoo’s Adrian Wojnarowski.

The Pistons main focus with this deal was getting rid of Gordon’s awful contract which still had two years and $15 million left on it.  Maggette’s contract expires after this upcoming season.

Maggette, a 12-year pro out of Duke, averaged 15.0 points and 3.9 rebounds a game for Charlotte last season.

The future first round pick may have been a steep price to pay to get out of the final year of Gordon’s deal, but with Rodney Stuckey and Brandon Knight making up the starting back court, it didn’t make much sense to have a high-priced backup for multiple years.

The deal will save the Pistons approximately $14.7 million on the two years remaining on Gordon’s contract. He’s slated to make $25.6 million over the term of his deal.

Maggette has $10.9 million left on an expiring contract.

Should the pick going to Charlotte is lottery-protected in 2013 and is also protected through the eighth selection in 2014 and No. 1 in 2015. It is unprotected if the deal extends to 2016.
