San Antonio Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich, gets painted as a guy who has quite the temper, but what a lot of people overlook is his endearing sense of humor. As some of you will remember, Popovich, sent some of star players home before a game against the Miami Heat in November. It was the last game of a grueling six-game road trip, but it is believed that he did it as some sort of protest to show the league that the schedule wasn’t fair. NBA commissioner David Stern, to say the least, wasn’t happy and promptly fined the Spurs organization $250,000 for jeopardizing the integrity of the league. The Heat visited the Spurs on Sunday night, and in a gesture that wreaked of retaliation, sat Lebron James, Dwyane Wade and Mario Chalmers, siting injuries as the reasoning. The NBA didn’t fine Miami what seemed like a similar crime as the Spurs committed because they followed the proper protocol. In a story via Bleacher Report, Popovich responded like only he can when asked for his opinion on the situation. “What kind of s— is that?” the Spurs coach said after stepping a few feet backward in mock astonishment. “Are you kidding me? Who would think of something like that? That’s below the belt. There’s no place for that.” In a video interview he had the same sarcastic tone excluding the bad language.   Some see the NBA’s reaction to the Heat resting their stars as a bit of a double standard, and a sign of favoritism towards the reigning champions. The NBA could have saved itself some grief if they just clarified what actions teams should take when sitting players following the issue with the Spurs.
