We are recovering well from the first major rainstorm on California's beautiful Central Coast by sipping a young Barbaresco by the warm fire. Occaisionally wines in the Beast Cellar never get a chance to reach full maturity, because they are pulled too young from the cool, wet confines of the cellar, opened and quaffed. This Barbaresco, a Cantina del Pina 2004, is a touch hot and rough right now, but still shimmers with crisp cherry, stony minerality and substantial grape tannin. As it ages, the rough tannins could integrate into a beautiful, earthy, mushroomy delight, or this wine could be a washout, fall apart and never mature.
