The ex NBA guard is from Peoria, Illinois. He played at Indiana University, and as a freshman averaged almost 17 ppg. He followed that season with a 16 ppg sophomore year, and in his junior year he averaged nearly 20 ppg and was named C0-MVP of the Big Ten and was an All-American.
A.J Guyton was drafted by the Chicago Bulls in the 2nd round of arguably one of the best drafts of all time, the 2000 Draft. That year the Bulls also drafted Marcus Fizer, Chris Mihm (who they traded), Dalibor Bagaric, Jake Voshkul, and Khalid El-Amin. Those scouts must’ve have been more than proud looking back 2 years after this draft.
In his rookie season Guyton played 19 mpg, shot 40%, and averaged 6 ppg. In 2001 Guyton played 13.5 mpg and averaged 5.4 ppg. There was no arguing that A.J. was getting his shots up…he averaged over 5 attempts per game for his first 2 seasons. In 2002 he was signed by the Los Angeles Lakers, he was also waived by them a few months later. But one month later he was signed to a 10 day contract by the Golden State Warriors where he played in 2 games and scored no points.
Guyton would go on to play in the NBDL, Italy, Israel, Croatia, and Sweeden. He is now coaching in his home town for the ABA Midwest Flames.
