Once upon time Auburn basketball actually made some noise, thanks to Chris Porter and his afro in the ’99 and ’00 seasons. Porter was born in Abbeville, Alabama and after bama high school he went to play ball at JUCO where he was an All-American. He immediately earned the opportunity to be a War Eagle in 1998. In his first year (Junior), the 6-7 forward averaged 16 ppg along with 8.6 rpg and 2.1 spg in 28.7 mpg. He was named SEC Player of the Year and an All-American, he also led the Tigers to the Sweet 16. In his final season Porter put up similar stats, 14.6 ppg, 7.3 rpg, and 2.0 spg. However, Chris became a victim of the Sports Illustrated cover jinx. He accepted money from an agent to help his mom out, and consequently was suspended for the last 8 games of the season. Despite his troubles and struggles it was time for Chris Porter to enter the 2000 NBA draft. Good thing he already had an agent.
In one of the worst drafts of all-time, Chris Porter was selected 26th overall….in the 2nd round by the Golden State Warriors. Surprisingly Chris Porter had a solid rookie year, but it was his only year in the NBA. Porter was able to start 35 games, and although he only averaged 22.5 mpg, he averaged 8.6 ppg and 3.7 rpg.
In the 2001 offseason Porter was caught with small plastic bags of drugs known as “cocaine” and “marijuana”. He was later traded as part of a 3-team trade with Hornets and the 76ers. Porter went to the Charlotte Hornets who traded cash to the Golden State Warriors; the Charlotte Hornets also traded Derrick Coleman to the Philadelphia 76ers, and the Golden State Warriors traded Corie Blount and Vonteego Cummings to the Philadelphia 76ers. Then Philadelphia 76ers sent George Lynch, Jerome Moiso and Robert Traylor to the Charlotte Hornets and in return the Philadelphia 76ers traded Cedric Henderson and a 2005 1st round draft pick (Joey Graham) to the Golden State Warriors.
Porter never saw the NBA floor again, probably because he missed his flight to Charlotte and the organization released him. It’s almost like he didn’t want to be in the NBA. Porter went on to play for Dakota Wizards and the Oklahoma Storm of the Continental Basketball Association where he would win the Championship. Porter then went on to play in the Euroleague, Portuguese Basketball League, Philippine Basketball Association, Chinese Basketball Association, Korean Basketball League, and then back to the Philippine Basketball Association. Chris Porter was actually extremely successful overseas, and became a fan favorite.
(I believe Chris Porter is also a gay porn star name considering some of the pictures that appeared in google).
