TEAMS: Dallas Mavericks, Boston Celtics, Cleveland Cavaliers, Washington Wizards, Arizona Wildcats
Before there was God’s Gift Achiuwa, there was God Shammgod. God played High School basketball at La Salle Academy in Manhattan, where he was obviously omnipotent and dominant. God made the McDonald’s All-American Team with star caliber players like Shareef Abdur-Rahim, Vince Carter, Chauncy Billups, Kevin Garnett, Antawn Jamison, Stephon Marbury, Paul Pierce, and…Jelani McCoy?
He attended Providence College in 95-96 and as a Freshman he averaged 9.6 ppg and 6.5 apg, and was named Big East All-Rookie Team. His assists totals set a Big East Freshman record for most assists, but unfortunately was later broken. The next season God averaged 10.8 ppg (44 FG%), 6.6 apg, and 2.4 spg. In that special ’97 season God along with his disciple, Austin Croshere, led the Friars to the Elite 8 where they lost to the Arizona Wildcats (who actually won the whole thing). The next season God entered the 1997 NBA Draft.
With the 47th overall pick of the draft the Washington Wizards selected God Shammgod. In God’s rookie season (his only NBA season), he averaged 3.1 ppg, 1.8 apg in only 7.3 mpg. His Per 36 Minutes stats were 15 ppg and 8.9 apg, but clearly he didn’t get the minutes, so he went to play basketball in overseas.
God played basketball in China, Poland, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and he also fooled around in the International Basketball League for a few seasons.
God Shammgod still has one of the best names of all-time. I mean what’s better than having your first name as God!?! Having God in your last name too.
