A Garden technician holds a sensitive mic at Sunday's game to eavesdrop on what Carmelo Anthony and is opponents say. James Dolan ordered two of them to be used at each game to avoid more "he said, he said" situations like the one that arose between Anthony and Kevin Garnett.  There has been a lot said about KG's trash talking since something he said to Carmelo Anthony set him off to the point where he lost all reason and followed KG to the locker room and then to the bus.  There were reports that KG's comments were about Melo's wife, but KG and Doc both said that those rumors were false and that KG never said anything inappropriate about Melo's wife. Now,  there is this report out of New York.   Since Melo proved to be so fragile that he completely came unhinged after some trash talk by Kevin Garnett,  it appears that others are trying to exploit that very same glitch in the Knicks' armor.  But the team's owner has taken it into his own hands to protect his fragile star's ego. Two audio technicians were stationed at two corners of the court — one a few feet just behind the Knicks bench, the other diagonally opposite — and they were holding those umbrella-shaped contraptions known as parabola microphones, which fed the audio into a DAT recorder on the truck on the loading dock. These guys had one directive from Dolan: Record every syllable Carmelo Anthony utters and absorbs while he’s on the court and on the bench, the Madison Square Garden CEO ordered them, and send the tape directly to me. The purpose of this command was unclear, but Dolan must have had a good reason to eavesdrop on Melo’s interactions. Was it to luxuriate in the poetic musings of his most valuable player, even though he is far from his most voluble player? Was it a teaching tool, so his coaches could school Melo on the potential hazards of courtside misconduct? So, now it's come to this. James Dolan has to record everything said to Anthony just in case he loses it again. Or maybe it's to discourage other players from saying anything that might make Melo upset. Whatever it is, it just shows that Melo has a very fragile ego and that isn't all that great for an NBA star. There will always be trash talk. There will always be hecklers. What will Dolan do if he records a player trash talking? I mean, what can he do? There's no rule against it and it's been part of basketball all the way back to it's beginnings. Lawrence Frank also weighed in on his former player and the issue of trash talking. Frank, who coached Garnett for a year in Boston, called the 18th-year veteran, "the Ray Lewis of football" for his ability to stay motivated throughout his long career and that if trash-talking is problematic for someone, then Frank suggested Garnett did his job, even invoking the name of Sun Tzu, the Chinese military tactical genius who wrote "Art of War." "People have been talking trash for years," Frank said. "Some of the greatest trash-talkers to play this game have been some of our greatest players. You've just got to play through all that. It's like when a referee makes a call you don't like." You have to wonder how Charlie Villanueva feels about his coach defending KG's trash talking after Villanueva was the recipient of another controversial trash talking incident. The bottom line is that if you don't let trash talk get to you, it's harmless and, I might add, worthless. The only reason that players trash talk is to get under the opponent's skin. If they don't allow it to bother them, the trash talk will stop. The way I see it, the person who responds and lets it get to them is the one who needs to change. [Discuss on CG Forums!]
