If league sources are correct, the 13 year run of Joe Dumars as Detroit Pistons’ team president could soon be coming to a close. Mitch Lawrence of the New York Daily News reported Sunday that based on some substantial league chatter, Dumars, along with his head coach Lawrence Frank, could quickly be on the way out of town. Prior to Monday night’s game, Pistons’ owner Tom Gores met with the media, admitting he was upset the team didn’t challenge for a playoff spot, according to Vince Ellis of the Detroit Free Press. He also added that everyone has to take responsibility for the terrible season, from ownership on down. Gores promised a fast resolution, and plans to meet and discuss things with Dumars and Frank in the coming days. As mentioned in Ellis’ report, Frank is 54-93 in two seasons coaching the Pistons, and based on Gores’s personal comments about him, it certainly doesn’t sound like Frank should enjoy his chances for a third season tour. Saying “Lawrence is a tremendous guy” but quickly backing that up with “I really have to think about what the best thing is” doesn’t shed outstanding light on someone’s positive future, much less a coach. Whether or not Dumars, a Detroit basketball legend, actually gets broomed is anyones guess, but clearly, Gores is disappointed and pondering a change on some level. This is rightfully so. The Pistons are his big investment, and he’s given Dumars, Frank and others plenty of time to right the ship since taking over. The franchise cannot continue to remain irrelevant and wallow in mediocrity, especially considering they’ve constantly done that lately. The thought that Gores is exploring change after another wasted season should make Pistons’ fans happy, given the boring brand of basketball going on in Auburn Hills lately. The coming days, with many different rumors of hoops change now swirling, should be very interesting. Max DeMara is a senior editor at The Detroit Sports Site.
