Looks like there is a pretty huge catch that is tied to the Orlando Magic signing Dwight Howard to a new contract this summer, and it isn’t just about adding pieces around Dwight, but discarding a rather large one.

Local 6 Sports Director David Pingalore is reporting that the Magic will be forced to fire head coach Stan Van Gundy, in order to keep Dwight Howard as the centerpiece of their franchise. Van Gundy has been the head coach for the Magic since the 2007 season, Howard’s second year in the league.

This isn’t the first time we are hearing similar rumors. Dwight allegedly told management and ownership before the trade deadline that he want Stan fired, but there has been no confirmation on that. It is likely that management did not want to deal with the additional media storm that it would have created, while they were still busy trying to tame the everything else at the time.

It certainly wouldn’t surprise me if Dwight played the “him or me” card with the Magic. He understands what he means to the franchise, and he can leverage them for whatever he wants, as he has done all season long.

It should be interesting as to what happens if the Magic find solid postseason success. It is hard to legitimize the firing of a coach if it seems like the players are responding to him. However, is it worth the risk of millions in dollars to have the second biggest commodity in Orlando, next to the Mouse, leaving?
