In a must read article by Randy Hill of Fox Sports Arizona, Hall dives into the San Antonio Spurs and Oklahoma City Thunder's Western Conference Finals match-up by getting the opinions of those who have been on the battle grounds against both teams, opposing teams assistant coaches. In the article, Hill interviewed five different NBA assistant coaches whose teams aren't in the playoffs. The names of the coaches are anonymous, but there are some really interesting thoughts and predictions by these select individuals. I always base the opinion of someone who actually does the profession or has been involved in the profession higher than just someone who writes about it, but has never actually been there. One of the coaches gives his reason why the Spurs are so tough to defeat, and why they've won 18-games in a row and are undefeated to start in the playoffs. "One thing they're really good at is locking into a team for a seven-game series and figuring out what nee...

Thunder, Spurs ready to fight for finals berth

When you think about playoff basketball, a certain type of game comes to mind: slow, grind-it-out halfcourt basketball with defensive-minded teams, hard fouls and short benches. That's not going to be what the Western Conference finals are all about. The San Antonio Spurs and Oklahoma City Thunder do care about defense and play it pretty well. But that's not what got them...

Please no more flopping, especially this rare double...

Why hasn't OKC committed to Brooks?

Scott Brooks has won 191 basketball games in less than four full seasons, directed the turnaround of a dormant franchise in a small market, managed the fragile chemistry of a young team and coached the Oklahoma City Thunder to within a whiff of the NBA Finals. And still the question roars louder than ever across the landscape of this league: Is he good enough? If it were only me...

Old vs. New: Western Conference Finals Prediction San Antonio Spurs vs. Oklahoma City Thunder

Old vs new. Experienced vs inexperienced. Manu vs. Harden. Boring vs exciting. The time has come that to see which team will prevail from the West; the experienced, cohesive and veteran San Antonio Spurs or the young, talented, fast Oklahoma City Thunder. Ginobili sparks Spurs to Game 1 win

Manu Ginobili scored 26 points and the San Antonio Spurs won their 19th in a row to tie the NBA record for longest winning streak kept alive in the playoffs, beating the Oklahoma City Thunder 101-98 to open the Western Conference finals on Sunday night. Obeying orders snarled by coach Gregg Popovich in a fourth-quarter timeout to play ''nasty,'' the Spurs erased...

Manu Ginobili andJames Harden’s Double Flop

It isn’t a playoff game unless there is a flop, but to see an amazing double flop is a must see. That’s exactly what happened in Game 1 of the Western Conference Finals between San Antonio and Oklahoma City as Harden and Ginobili collided. Manu and the Spurs had the last laugh as they [...]

Appreciate Tim Duncan's 15 Years of Dominance

Sports Illustrated's Chris Ballard beat me to the punch. On May 21, Wake Forest's own Tim Duncan was on the cover, and was the topic of the cover story. On the cover read, 'Finally getting to know the greatest, least appreciated player of his generation.' I couldn't have said it better myself. Right before our very eyes is someone who is a top-10 player of...

Thunder can't finish near-upset in Game 1

SAN ANTONIO (AP) -- The Oklahoma City Thunder almost did it: Almost stopped one of the longest winning streaks in NBA history, started the Western Conference finals with an upset and finally shed their underdog label. Then things got "nasty." Despite carrying a nine-point lead in the fourth quarter and having the San Antonio Spurs on their heels -- even by the admission...

Popovich discusses chances of Blair playing in game one

Driving up to the AT&T Center tonight, I noticed the media parking lot was almost at capacity. I walked into the media room and there were tons of media seating areas in our writing room. For two small market franchises who are not known for a lot of publicity, the San Antonio Spurs and Oklahoma City Thunder will be getting a lot of attention as their Western Conference Finals...

Spurs 101, Thunder 98

SAN ANTONIO -- The San Antonio Spurs overcame a sloppy start to defeat the Oklahoma City Thunder 101-98 Sunday at the AT&T Center in the opening game of the Western Conference finals. It was San Antonio's ninth consecutive victory in the playoffs and 19th in a row overall. Game 2 of the best-of-seven series is Tuesday in San Antonio. The Spurs, perhaps rusty from a seven...

It’s Finally Here: The Western Conference Finals

Still really good What follows is not intended to be a prediction of what will transpire in the NBA Championship series, but more an aesthetic claim: The Western Conference just plays much better basketball than the East. While the East collectively plays like the 1993 Knicks, complete with 150-point games, scrub-on-scrub flagrant fouls, “fake tough guys”, and a genuine lack...
