He doesn’t start many games (just one game in the 2010-11 season), but his presence on the Philadelphia 76ers’ roster is immeasurable.

Thaddeus Young, a 23-year old sixth man, is currently a restricted free agent, but has expressed his interest in returning to The City of Brotherly Love. Teams around the league, though, are becoming more aware of Young’s value (12.7 PPG, 5.3 RPG) and are conveying their interest in signing the former Georgia Tech Yellow Jacket.

This is making the 76ers very nervous.

Yes, they can match any offer that comes Young’s way, but because of the shortened offseason and the need around the league for a young impact player that has proven he can produce in limited minutes, the possibility of a team “overpaying” for Young comes into play.

The Sixers will match most of the possible offers, but with limited salary space, there comes a point when they might not be able to a match an offer that Young can’t resist, despite his desire to play for Philadelphia.

According to Chris Mannix of Sports Illustrated, the Sixers are becoming concerned with the possibility of having another team make an offer to Young that is too good to pass up and is out of the range for the Sixers to match.

Does Young deserve a big free-agent contract? Yes and no.

He is a terrific player, and he is very versatile. As mentioned above, he has produced in a very limited role coming off the bench for the Sixers, making him even more attractive to teams around the league because of his potential.

But then again, he has never been a full-time starter, and the question of whether or not he can handle an entire game’s workload is still to be determined.

There are teams around the league that are one or two pieces away from being a contender, which is why there could be a team that empties the bank for him considering just how short this offseason is and the fact that Young is a top 15 free agent in the market.

Just by scanning around the Internet and through Twitter, there are fans around the league that are making their voices heard regarding Young. Fans from Detroit, New Jersey, Denver and Charlotte have all stated on Twitter how their teams should pursue Young, citing that their orgainzations have the money and the need for an athletic, 6’8” forward.

This will definitely be an interesting story to follow as the offseason progresses and free agents start coming off the board.
