Stephen A Smith loves to talk. I know, tell you something you don't know. Recently he's been talking a lot about Doc Rivers. A couple of weeks ago, Stephen A was predicting a trade of KG, Paul Pierce AND Doc to the Clippers. Um. I'm trying to remember the last time a coach was traded. None come to mind. Of course he probably meant that the Clippers would trade for KG and the Captain with the assurance that Doc would leave the Celtics and come coach their team. As no surprise to anyone, Stephen A is still talking. He was recently on Sports Center and extended a possible explanation as to why Doc hasn't made his intentions known about this season. He's hearing that Doc is strongly considering staying in Boston but that it's not etched in stone. He's still weighing his options. He acknowledges the fact that Doc would never be allowed out of his contract to coach another team in the Eastern Conference (as in the Nets), but if given the chance to coach, say the Clippers (stop me if you've heard this before), that he'd strongly entertain that possibility. The big question is, would Danny? He's been hearing murmurs that the relationship between Doc and Danny isn't all roses and he closed the segment with this statement." “You work with somebody all the time, it gets to a point where sometimes you’re tired of hearing the same voice and tired of seeing the same faces,” Smith said. “When it comes to Danny Ainge with Doc Rivers, that very well may be the case. Doc hasn’t told me that, but those are the kinds of things I’ve been hearing since they were eliminated in the first round." Doc may be tired of seeing Danny's face, but he should have thought about that before signing a 5 year contract. That's just my opinion. I know that contracts are broken every day in the NBA these days. George Karl still had a year left on his contract and coaches are let go mid year all the time. But, it has always bothered me when either side breaks a contract. Apparently contracts mean nothing any more on either side, and that is sad. Maybe Doc will be back and maybe he won't. Maybe he'll try to coach somewhere else and maybe he won't. Maybe it's a personal issue and nothing to do with the team. But, whatever the problem is, he has only fulfilled 2 out of 5 years on this contract and it's a shame that we even have to discuss this. I understood his indecision that season before he signed this contract. He didn't know if he wanted to continue. But no one forced him to sign for 5 years. If he didn't want to be involved in a rebuild he should have signed a 2 or 3 year contract. The fact that he still isn't ready to commit to this season is odd and if he decides to leave, is unfair to the team. Danny has already come out and said that he'll definitely be back. Many of the best available coaches are being signed by other teams. It's just not the way I picture the very professional person that I've come to believe that Doc is to behave. There has to be something that none of us, including Stephen A Smith, knows. If nothing else, it's giving all of us something to think about during these slow off season months.
